Hwang Dong-hyuk moves on to a new show after a divisive 'Squid Games' ending
Who knew that a singular show like 'Squid Game' would become one of the most-watched foreign shows on Netflix? South Korean creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, who brought the brutally entertaining world of 'Squid Game' to the screen, was able to sustain audience interest in the show till the very last episode. While the three seasons of the Netflix show grabbed a lot of eyeballs, the streaming platform giant isn't entirely wrong in wanting to capitalize on the resulting goodwill. Netflix recently confirmed that it is partnering up with Dong-hyuk once again.
As reported by ScreenRant, Dong-hyuk is producing an upcoming casino-based crime series known as 'The Dealer'. Netflix has already greenlighted the show. However, production details are currently unknown. Firstman Studio Banner, which was behind 'Squid Game' and is led by Dong-hyuk, is producing the upcoming show. A potential release date is yet to be announced.
The official Netflix press release teased that 'The Dealer' will chronicle the struggles of an otherwise brilliant casino dealer by the name of Geonhwa. When her cherished plans for a wedding fall to pieces due to her falling victim to a housing scheme scam, Geonhwa is left with no other option but to revert to her old ways of dealing and join the criminal underworld, thus putting her skills of shuffling to use. All of this is done to enable her to fulfill her promise to get married and regain control of her life.
The upcoming show has brought together a spectacular cast, which is led by Jung So-min as Jung Geonhwa. In the past, So-min has starred in 'Would You Marry Me?' and 'Alchemy of Souls'. Netflix describes her character as, "An exceptionally adept and seasoned dealer who has lived a life far removed from the vices of the casino floor, Geonhwa finds her life upended when a housing scam derails her newlywed plans. Forced into the underworld she’s avoided, she unleashes the full extent of her powers to the test." Joining So-min will be Ryoo Seung-bum as the desperate gambler Hwang Chisu. Being a gambling addict, Chisu can't stay away from the casino and eventually joins forces with So-min.
The rest of the cast includes Lee Soo-hyuk as Jo Jun. He is described as an intensely skilful casino player who is used to turning the tables. Lastly, Ryu Kyung-soo will appear as Choi Wooseung, a detective and Geonhwa's fiancé. Beneath his amiable exterior, Wooseung is a meticulous and stern investigator who spares no suspects. Choi Young-hwan, who is known as a cinematographer and has contributed to 'The Thieves,' 'Smugglers' and 'Veteran', will be making his debut as a director with 'The Dealer'.
