One of the side-effects of the lockdown that has been imposed in most countries around the world in a bid to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus is reportedly a surge in nude pictures being sent across the interwebs.

At least, that's the impression one gets while trawling through social media these days, with many users admitting to sending racy snaps to their friends and partners in a bid to spice up their life in quarantine.

With in-person dates off the table due to bars and pubs being shut all over, it should be no surprise that nudes have become commonplace.

American journalist and author Dana Schwartz got one such discussion going on her Twitter page, where she quipped, "Nudes sent during quarantine don't count."

The tweet quickly went viral and was liked close to 11,000 times, with many in the comment section seemingly agreeing with Schwartz's sentiment and sharing their own experiences during the lockdown.

"It's a public service in a dire time of need....it's an essential business like groceries," one wrote.

"Cosigned. And all recipients will ignore background objects including: crumpled Kleenex, vaporizers, half-empty cereal bowls, empty bags of Cheetos, et al," another user shared.

"This feels like a rule we're all going to regret to agreeing to pretty God damn soon," a third commented. "Especially considering how long this bloody thing might last."

Most of the commenters seemed to agree on a general rule that "what happens in quarantine stays in quarantine"

One user even imitated Carrie Bradshaw from 'Sex and the City' and wrote their tweet in the style Bradshaw would write her newspaper columns. "And as I sent a nude to the 35th person during quarantine, I wondered...am I a w*****, or just a damsel in distress?"

Men backed up the notion that nudes were being sent freely, with one tweeting, "This quarantine s*** is f***** with these b*****s I swear, I got nudes from 2 different girls today."

"If you are not receiving nudes during this quarantine then you need to change your females ASAP," a second said.

And it turned out that many were sending it just to feel better about themselves and not because they wanted to amp up their sex drive.

One woman, who identified herself as Alicia, revealed to Buzzfeed News that she sent nude photos to one of her friends for validation. "So I sent them to her for her to say nice things and hype me up," she said. "She responded 'she thicc, ok ok i see you mami, absolutely killing the game.' I was happy."

Jackson, a music writer based in Newcastle on Australia's East Coast, similarly shared that he had been sending and receiving more nudes over Snapchat and Twitter DMs as a way to "pass the time."

"When you're single, and you can't meet up with anyone, phone sex/snapchat sex/exchanging nudes is a good way to pass the time and keep libido in check," he said.
