This story contains spoilers for 'The Rookie' Season 8 Episode 15.

'The Rookie' delivered one of its most confusing storylines in recent memory. However, a cameo appearance from the 'Supernatural' stars was the only saving grace in the episode dominated by bizarre plot twists. Episode 15 from Season 8, titled 'Survive the Streets,' aired on Monday on ABC. The documentary episode explored the world of demons with the help of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who played demon hunters for 15 seasons in the fantasy-horror drama series. However, the actors didn't reprise their fan-favorite roles as Sam and Dean Winchester; they appear as themselves in the ABC drama.

In the episode, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his partner, Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez), are called to the house of the retired LAPD officer, Rich Rowley (Jamie Martz), who made a series of 'cringey' training videos for the LAPD from the mid-1990s until 2015. A conspiracy nut, he seems extremely disturbed and is constantly muttering to himself. Moments later, he pulls out the knife stuck in his chest and dies instantly. As the officers look around the house, they find a coffin inside Rich’s garage containing the body of Marcus, a homicide victim from 2020, who was similarly stabbed in the heart.

Furthermore, Marcus has a tattoo that resembles a symbol from one of Rich's training videos, which they come to realize, features several hidden messages tied to other cold cases of victims that were stabbed in the same way. Another bizarre connection is that all the victims have a 1930 penny on them. The episode then delves into conspiracy theories about alien abduction, and the demon Malaphus from 'Three Hundred Days of Hell ' (a fictional film mentioned within the universe of 'The Rookie').

The episode reveals that Rowley was investigating a demon-worshipping murder cult that had been active in the city for 60 years. During his investigation, John is also interviewed by the documentary crew from last season, with the show's creator, Alexi Hawley, reprising his role as the documentary interviewer. Amidst all this chaos, the 'Supernatural' stars make a cameo appearance, where they speak to the mockumentary crew via Zoom to talk about their brief interaction with Rich during a fan event at MonsterCon the previous year.

Since Rich was a fan of 'Supernatural,' he questioned the actors about real-life demon hunters, proving that he was clearly blurring fiction with reality. During the Zoom call, Abigail mentions that Jared and Jensen are in the same league as the K-pop Demon Hunters. While Jensen denies the similarities, saying, "No, not like that," Jared accepts by saying, "I mean, kind of like that." Watch the latest episodes of 'The Rookie' on Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and stream on Hulu.
