'The Rookie' spinoff show gets a major update—but there’s still a catch
'The Rookie' debuted on ABC in 2018 and has been going strong ever since. The police procedural stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the Los Angeles Police Department's oldest rookie, assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. Although Fillion has other notable film and television appearances to his credit, such as 'Firefly' and 'Castle,' John Nolan is the one character to whom the actor has been absolutely dedicated. For a show that has been successfully running for eight seasons to date, fans aren't in the wrong when they demand a spin-off set in the same universe. ABC had previously rolled the dice with 'The Rookie: Feds', but the ill-fated spin-off was pulled from the air just after a single season.
Another 'The Rookie' spinoff, which has been making the rounds lately, recently received an exciting update. Known officially as 'The Rookie: North,' the spin-off is currently in the pipeline and has finished production on the pilot episode. The plot of the spinoff follows a middle-aged man who turns his life around and joins the Pierce County Police Department as the force's oldest rookie, in the aftermath of a devastating home invasion that forces him to change his career. Karen Fukuhara, who is best known for portraying the character of Kimiko in the popular Prime Video series 'The Boys,' was recently approached by Collider's Steve Weintraub to shed some light on the status of the new 'The Rookie' spinoff.
Fukuhara revealed, "I just got back from shooting the pilot in Vancouver for The Rookie: North. It's a spin-off of The Rookie. The original is led by Nathan Fillion, and he's been a friend of mine for years. He's just a wonderful human being. He's so kind-hearted, so I knew stepping into this project, I was in good hands, because everything trickles down from the number one." Fukuhara also commented on the importance of having a balanced, sensitive crew so that shooting becomes a fulfilling experience. She added, "How they conduct a set is going to be how the vibe of the crew is going to be. It's really important to have a good number one, and we have Jay Ellis, who is at the forefront of it all. I really hope we get picked up. We find out at the end of April, beginning of May. So, I might be a Canadian again."
As revealed by Fukuhara, 'The Rookie: North' still has a long way to go before ABC greenlights it and orders it to series. As of this writing, there's no release date for the spinoff, and one might hope that further information will be made available soon. 'The Rookie' is exclusively available on ABC.
