'The Pitt' showrunner drops major update on missing character's return in Season 2
In what comes as good news for 'The Pitt' fans, season 2 will see the return of a long-absent character. The five-time Emmy-winning medical drama dropped the new season months after the end of season 1. The new season began with Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) and the emergency room staff of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center dealing with a chaotic July 4 weekend shift.
The new season saw the return of a major chunk of the previous season's cast, with only Tracy Ifeachor exiting the role of Dr. Heather Collins by the end of the first season. While Collin's departure will be addressed on-screen, fans will need to wait a bit longer for Mateo Diaz (Jalen Thomas Brooks), one of the recurring characters from season 1.
According to series creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill, Mateo will return eventually, and he's "working the night shift." The update from the showrunner was listed on Matt Webb Mitovich's Matt's Inside Line newsletter, where Mateo's status was being spoken about. The character had quite a bit of screentime in the first 15 episodes of the show and was known for being Javadi's crush, who returned in the season finale of 'The Pitt' Season 1. Most notably, he also had some heated interactions with Drug Driscoll (Drew Powell). It is possible that 'The Pitt' season 2 could bring in a romantic arc for Javadi and Diaz by the end of the season.
In related news, Wyle weighed in on the new season. He also spoke of his relationship with Patrick Ball's Frank Langdon. "Langdon really wants to be validated by Robby again, and Robbie really doesn’t want to have anything to do with Langdon," he told Deadline. "We think that it is because Langdon is the disappointment, you know, the student who betrayed him and lied to his face. And as the season progresses, you start to see that in some ways, Robby blames himself for Langdon’s behavior more than he blames Langdon, because he was the teacher, and it happened on his watch."
"Langdon was his star student, and that was more of a moral failing for Robby than it was for Langdon. Some of his hesitancy to be around him is like Superman being around kryptonite. He now represents somebody who has gone down the therapeutic road, faced their demons, made amends, humbled themselves, and come back to try to rebuild their life—but Robby’s not there yet. So it’s an interesting situation the two men find themselves in," he added.
New episodes of 'The Pitt' Season 2 release on Thursdays via HBO Max.
