'Penny Dreadful: City of Angel': Watch season premiere for FREE now. Here's how
If you were biting your nails, waiting for Sunday night for Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' season premiere, be pleasantly surprised.
Showtime just dropped the series premiere online, ahead of its on-air premiere. The show has already created a buzz thanks to its lead Natalie Dormer as an evil supernatural demon who shapeshifts in 1938 LA and eggs men on to do their worst — kind of the opposite of her previous 'Games of Thrones' role where she was helping Joffrey control his worst instincts.
The premiere episode is available for free online sampling, on streaming platforms, and on-demand. You can watch it for free now on YouTube and SHO.com. The series stars Tony and Emmy-winner Nathan Lane along with Natalie Dormer and Adriana Barraza. The show's male lead is Daniel Zovatto (who plays Detective Vega, "touched" by Santa Muerte). He partners up with Lane's character, Lewis Michener, to solve a grisly murder that looks like a Santa Muerte ritual.
A spin-off of the original 'Penny Dreadful' series starring Eva Green, the new series opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. The epic story will mix supernatural elements from Mexican-American folklore with the rich history of Los Angeles of the time: from the building of the city's first freeways, to its Mexican-American community and traditions, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. As the series' synopsis promises, "before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart".
Other actors on the show include Kerry Bishé, Rory Kinnear, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza and Johnathan Nieves. Tony and Golden Globe winner, John Logan, helms the series, serving as showrunner, writer and executive producer. Other notable names associated with the project are Sam Mendes ('1917') and Pippa Harris ('Revolutionary Road'), both of Neal Street Productions, Michael Aguilar ('Kidding'), and James Bagley, serving as executive producers.
The 10-episode series will officially premiere on air this Sunday, April 26 at 10 pm ET/PT on Showtime. Besides delighting fans with an early online release, the network is also donating to the 'Farmworkers Covid-19 Pandemic Relief Fund' to help raise funds for farmworkers and their families, similar to the Vega family depicted in the series.
According to a press statement, the network said: "California produces over two-thirds of the fruits and nuts and over a third of the vegetables consumed in the US. With this series set in Los Angeles, the network is donating in support of those who feed us through their labor and ensure our food supply, as these communities may be among the hardest hit due to lack of resources."
