This article contains spoilers for 'WandaVision' Episodes 1 and 2

Though we remember Teyonah Parris as the actress slated to play an elder version of Monica Rambeau in Marvel's miniseries, 'WandaVision', there was a twist in the tale when she was introduced as Geraldine instead. MCU fans will remember Monica from 'Captain Marvel' where she plays the child of Carol Danvers's (Brie Larson) best friend.

The new Disney+ content should have ideally introduced her as Monica but changes the character in its entirety. Geraldine is one of the other newcomers to the town of Westview who quickly becomes friends with Wanda while also volunteering for a fundraiser with her. From the show footage, we have seen so far, Monica reportedly works for SWORD and this might explain the character twist.

With the two episodes establishing that Wanda was pretty much living in a made-up fantasy, we speculated if SWORD was actually treating the Avengers post the events of 'Avengers: Infinity War' and 'Avengers: Endgame'. Keeping this theory and Parris's interview with Bustle, it does look like Monica might be an ally who might be sent into Wanda's reality in order to try and bring her back to the actual world. While we have no idea how they may have programmed Monica's consciousness perhaps into Wanda's world, this, for now, could be the only explanation.

Adding to this is the hesitation she has in introducing herself to Wanda. "Geraldine," she says after a bit of a stammer when Wanda introduces herself.

According to the site, Parris is already anticipating that 'WandaVision' viewers would be left scratching their heads. "'Well she was announced as Monica Rambeau — the actress was — so who is Geraldine?'" she imagines them wondering. "'Is that Monica? Is it a different person? How is this all going to weave together?'"

Though she did reveal it was a dream come true to play the role. "I’ve wanted to be a part of the MCU since Iron Man in ‘08, and that was simply because it looked fun and badass and things were blowing up and people were flying," she says. "And then now, actually being a part of it, just knowing that I get to play a Black woman who’s a superhero ... I get the opportunity to be that image that I didn’t see growing up, and that’s really exciting for me."

Even though we don't actually have much of an idea about how Monica's character arc pans out, there will be a concrete explanation Marvel will provide over the course of the series.

'WandaVision' Episodes 1 and 2 are available for streaming on Disney+
