WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has found herself in hot water after claiming that the US has been risking 'writing a blank cheque for atrocity' with Israel's military aid against Gaza.

The 34-year-old congresswoman was at a Tele-town hall meeting when a caller told her that the Biden administration needed to "defund Israel" for allegedly carrying out a "genocide" and instead allocate the money for providing aid to Gaza, which has been under blockade since Hamas conducted a terror strike in Israel on October 7.

Ocasio-Cortez expressed sympathy with the caller, claiming that US military aid to Israel is being used to commit “violations of human rights” in Gaza, as per NY Post.

“What we are witnessing is the gross violations of human rights in Gaza. That is being done with US military assistance,” she said, adding “We are risking writing a blank check for atrocity.”

During the meeting, Ocasio-Cortez, who represents portions of The Bronx and Queens, claimed that billions in assistance funds for Israel should be tied to upholding human rights and stopping "war crimes."

She also acknowledged that atrocities committed by Hamas are reprehensible, but that doesn’t justify condoning the slaughtering of Gaza residents as Israel moves to clear out the Hamas terrorists.

At least 1,200 people, including at least 326 children, have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced, after Israel launched sustained retaliatory air strikes after a large-scale attack by Hamas. On October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza by land, sea, and air, killing 1000 people and wounding more than 2000. Israeli soldiers and civilians have also been taken hostage by Hamas and moved into Gaza. The attack prompted a declaration of war by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The congresswoman previously claimed that Israel was waging "war crimes" in Gaza as payback for the bombings on October 7 that killed 1,200 Israelis, the majority of whom were civilians.

“War crimes don’t further constitute and justify war crimes,” she said on Monday. In addition, AOC claims that between 14,000 and 15,000 people have died in Gaza in contrast to the 1,000–2,000 fatalities of Hamas terrorists.

“It’s completely unacceptable …I don’t think the American people want to see our public resources going to fund gross human rights violations,” she said.

She described Israel's "indiscriminate bombing" of Gaza as "unsustainable" and said it would not result in a long-term, peaceful resolution with the Palestinians.

The temporary cease-fire allowing for the release of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas was a hopeful sign, according to Ocasio-Cortez.

Internet reacts to Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks

After Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks surfaced on the internet, many users slammed her for claiming that the US is 'writing a blank cheque for atrocity' with Israeli military aid.

“AOC has blundered into truth without meaning to.  Because the US gives a lot to Hamas via UNWRA and Hamas is a running sore of human rights violations,” one user said.

“Was any US aid used in Gaza to buy weapons? Did US aid go to line the pockets of Hamas leaders? Any concern about that?” a second user asked.

“That’s rich coming from someone who has used the covid aid for her makeup & not else 🥴,” a third user slammed, while a fourth wrote, “AOC probably thinks the hostage trade wasn't fair enough to Hamas.”

“Surely Hamas did a great speedy job accurately counting 15k victims when it can’t even find hostages,” a fifth user wrote.

“Hey AOC did you view the atrocity video put by Hamas, Wake the H Up,” one more said.
