MTV Video Music Awards 2019 (VMAs): Miley Cyrus performs 'Slide Away' amid split with Liam Hemsworth as Kaitlynn Carter shows support
At 2019 MTV Video Music Awards in New Jersey, Miley Cyrus performed a rousing version of her recent single 'Slide Away'. The performance was all the more poignant because it was the first since her split with Liam Hemsworth and it also had Kaitlynn Carter supporting her from backstage.
The single 'Slide Away' was first released on Friday, August 16 and the fans of the 'Wrecking Ball' singer instantly speculated that it had to be something that had a connection to the breakup with Liam.
The song was written by Alma Miettinen, Michael L Williams II and, Andrew Wyatt. The song has been clearly centered around the breakup. The name of the song as well is a given that it was written to signify their relationship sliding away.
The emotional lyrics of the song go something like this, "Once upon a time it was made for us, Woke up one day, it had turned to dust, Baby, we were found but now we're lost". The words of the song along with the chorus seem to hint at how their love life has come to a bitter end and that Liam and Miley will be going their separate ways just a year into their relationship.
During her VMA performance, Miley put her own twist on the lyrics to the last part of the song where she sang "You're right, I'm grown now", instead of the original song's lyrics "You're right, we're grown now." Her words clearly hinting at the struggles the couple may have had in their relationship.
On August 22, Miley hinted about their split onTwitter which then gave room for more speculation and rumors. The split was announced the same week pictures of her kissing Carter in Italy were flooding the internet. Even at the VMAs she and Carter were spotted walking backstage, with Carter putting her hand on Miley's head at one point.
Miley was nominated for two Video Music Awards for her songs — 'Mother's Daughter' was nominated for Best Power Anthem and Song of Summer. A source told Us earlier this month that Carter and Miley began bonding right after the split between Cyrus and Liam by saying that "She and Miley became close within the past few weeks because they connected over their breakups and leaned on each other,” the source said. Since its release, "Slide Away" has quickly become this summer's biggest breakup song.
