Shouting or Singing? Denise Sánchez featured in viral 'Girl Explaining' meme shares image's backstory

Denise Sánchez, 21, was pictured with her then-boyfriend when the meme-worthy image was snapped

Scrolling through social media, you must have definitely come across the 'Girl Explaining' meme. The viral meme made the rounds on various sites, with the format being also dubbed the 'Girl Explaining to Guy' or even simply, the 'Bro Girl' meme. The viral woman in the picture is actually Denise "Dinu" Sanchez who was attending a concert in 2018 with her then-boyfriend.

She has recently spoken out, revealing what was going on when the image that made her the meme sensation she is today. As it turns out, the hilarious memes that stemmed from the snap were more creative because Sanchez's explanation is quite simple. At the concert, her boyfriend was tired as it had been getting late. She had one arm wrapped around him and gestured off towards the distance in the direction of the camera. She was singing along to the song at the concert.

The image of Denize with her mouth open, as if talking animatedly in her boyfriend's ear, clashed hilariously with her boyfriend's blank expression and instantly went viral after the couple unintentionally photobombed another woman's picture. But the backstory as revealed by the nutrition student is rather undramatic.  She recalled the original picture posted by the woman, saying, "I remember she uploaded it to Twitter. She said, 'What a letdown. They messed up the picture because those two kids were in the back with that face.'" Speaking to The Daily Mail. "She was laughing because we came out in the back of the photo and she came out pretty, but she could not post it because we were in it." The hilarious memes around this image started appearing in early 2019 in Spanish-speaking meme circles. It then gained ground and entered mainstream meme culture. It has once-again resurfaced in 2022. Sanchez's 'Girl Explaining' is often used a the female version of the 'Bro Explaining' meme, with the genders swapped. 

According to Know Your Meme, the first meme made out of this image was posted in a now-deleted tweet on February 4th, 2019. The Spanish caption roughly translated to the girl talking to the man as if he was gay, expressing her dissatisfaction at the information and accosting him further. Then, MemesNutricion posted the meme on Twitter with the Spanish caption. In it, the girl is shouting at the boy, telling him to not trust Herbalife and other quick nutrition fixes.

With the resurfacing of this meme, there's been no looking back. Hilarious captions have been added to the reaction image.  

Users are having fun coming up with their own versions of what the girl may be screaming in her boyfriend's ear. 

Someone else has her explain the plot of 'Sex and the City' to the guy who appears bored out of his senses.

Another user adds a relatable caption to the tweet. Afterall, haven't we all been distracted while out running errands and ended up with impulsive purchases? 

The viral meme has also taken over the 'Lord of the Rings' explanations:
