‘Macho Man’ by Village People seems to be the unofficial anthem for Donald Trump rallies as the song has been played at a lot of his events since 2018. The track was again played in the background when POTUS landed in Florida as part of his US presidential campaign on October 12. The track ‘Macho Man’ was released in 1978 and became popular as the gay anthem back in the day. The song by the American disco troupe Village People has also given hits such as ‘YMCA' and ‘In the Navy'.

It did not take long before people started discussing it on Twitter. One user posted, "Macho Man is the gay anthem. Bet #ProudBoys are loving it. Fabulous!!!!" One user said, "Damn, there are actually people who think Trump and his crowd don't know the Village People and the song Macho Man aren't gay af?" One Twitterati stated, "He totally knows. He was at Studio 54 back in the day when the song was huge. Trust me everyone in NYC knew. Macho Man & YMCA. But it was fun to dance to and to this day, it gets people up & in his mind motivated. He loves this song at rallies. Everyone else threatened to sue."

Another user added, "It's very on brand for Trump to think that Macho Man is about being tough, instead of what it, and all Village People songs, are really about: being gay.” One user stated, “Just started watching the #Trump rally from FL tonight... first song I hear playing before he walks up to the podium, I s**t you not, is 'Macho Man' This man is the best troll the world has ever seen.” One asserted, “Who wants to tell @realDonaldTrump and #MAGA that 'Macho Man' is a gay anthem?”

The song ‘Macho Man’ comes from French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer Victor Willis and the lyrics go, “Check it out my body, body, Don't you doubt my body, body/ Talkin' bout my body, body, Check it out my body/ Every man wants to be a macho macho man, To have the kind of body, always in demand/ Jogging in the mornings, go man go, Works out in the health spa, muscles glow/ You can best believe that, he's a macho man, Ready to get down with, anyone he can."

Interestingly, the group first loved the attention the song was getting in February 2020 when he allowed Trump to plays the songs at events, despite being flooded with requests from fans urging the band to block the president's use of the music, NBC News reported. In an official Facebook post, the group said, “We have received numerous request demanding that we prevent or ban President Donald Trump’s use of our songs, particularly ‘YMCA’ and ‘Macho Man.’ Since our music is not being used for a specific endorsement, the President’s use is perfectly legal."

Then in June 2020, Victor Willis, the only original member still with the group, posted on Facebook against the use of his song amid growing protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He had stated, "I ask that you no longer use any of my music at your rallies especially ‘YMCA’ and ‘Macho Man.’ I can no longer look the other way,” as reported by the Independent.

‘Macho Man’ is the second single recorded by the American disco group Village People and the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 in June 24, 1978. The track, which got popular as a gay anthem back in the day, also became Village People's first charting hit in the United States reaching 25 on the Hot 100 chart. The song has always been an integral part of pop culture. ‘Macho Man’ has been featured in several movies such as ‘Addams Family Values', ‘In & Out', ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines', ‘The Nutty Professor’ and even in popular sitcoms such as ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer'.
