Monterey Park mass shooting: Chaos as multiple fatalities reported during Lunar New Year celebrations
MONTEREY PARK, CALIFORNIA: Law enforcement and other emergency services are reportedly responding to a mass shooting on West Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park, east of Los Angeles. Multiple people have been killed and the death toll is unclear at this time.
The shooting occurred shortly after 10.30pm on Saturday, January 21, when police responded to reports of an active shooter near 122 West Garvey Avenue, which houses several local businesses. More than a dozen people have been injured and there are multiple fatalities, initial reports indicate, albeit specific figures couldn't be immediately confirmed.

As reported by BNO News, the incident took place during festive celebrations for the Chinese New Year. While the circumstances arond the shooting are unclear at the time of publication, it's worth noting that the area is home to multiple Asian-owned businesses. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire but initially assumed it was fireworks during a night of celebration for the lunar new year. Chaos and confusion ensued on social media as reports of the shooting came to light.
"Praying for everyone involved in the Monterey park shooting tonight was supposed to be a night of celebration for the lunar new year," one tweeted.
"Hearing about a shooting in my city just now ))): we just celebrated the lunar new year festival in Monterey park on that same street," another wrote.
"Sending love & prayers to the victims from tonight's shooting in Monterey Park, on the Lunar New Year, no less. This world feels so piercing sometimes," someone else added.
