'A Very British Scandal': Live stream, release date, cast, plot and all you need to know about Amazon's biographical series
BBC One and Amazon Studios are teaming up for a follow-up to ‘A Very English Scandal’ featuring Claire Foy and Paul Bettany in the lead roles. Titled ‘A Very British Scandal’, the upcoming series focuses on the divorce of the Duke (Paul Bettany) and Duchess of Argyll (Claire Foy), one of the most notorious, extraordinary and brutal legal cases of all time. The case was one of the most infamous stories of the 20th century and featured accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery and an explicit Polaroid picture.
‘A Very English Scandal’ was one of the most critically-acclaimed shows of 2018 and covered the Thorpe affair. The show was nominated for 4 Primetime Emmys and 3 Golden Globes during its run. There is no official release date announced for the show. However, it is reported that the shooting will take place across the UK later this year.
Plot
The official synopsis reads: “Famed for her charisma, beauty, and style, Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, dominated the front pages as a divorcee featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery, and an explicit polaroid picture all played out in the white-hot glare of the 1960s media. As her contemporaries, the press, and the judiciary sought to vilify her, Margaret kept her head held high with bravery and resilience, refusing to go quietly as she was betrayed by her friends and publicly shamed by a society that reveled in her fall from grace.”
Cast
Claire Foy
Foy is one of the most prominent names in the British entertainment industry and gained prominence for her portrayal as Anne Boleyn in the series ‘Wolf Hall’. However, she received universal acclaim after portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the blockbuster Netflix show ‘The Crown’. The series made her receive the Golden Globe in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2017 and a Primetime Emmy in the same category later that year.
Her film credits include ‘The Lady in the Van’, ‘Breathe’, ‘First Man’ and ‘The Girl in the Spider’s Web’.
Paul Bettany
The actor first came to the attention of mainstream audiences when he appeared in British films like ‘Gangster No. 1’ and ‘A Knight’s Tale’. He was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for playing Stephen Maturin in the movie ‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’.
He has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008. The actor voiced the character of JARVIS in the first ‘Iron Man’ movie and went on to play the role of Vision in movies like ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’. Bettany was recently seen reprising the role of Vision in the Disney+ series ‘WandaVision’.
Creators
The show is being written by Sarah Phelps, who is known for writing shows like ‘EastEnders’, ‘The ABC Murders’ and ‘A Very English Scandal’. Meanwhile, Anne Sewitsky is donning the director’s hat for the project. Phelps, Sewitsky, Foy, Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin, Diarmuid McKeown and Delyth Scudamore will serve as executive producers. Amazon Studios is co-producing in the US.
