Looks like the shaping of 'Top Gun 2' is bringing back the nostalgia of the 80s everyone was hoping for. According to The Wrap, Val Kilmer would be back for 'Top Gun: Maverick' alongside Tom Cruise. It would be hard for any Top Gun fan to imagine a Top Gun movie without the Iceman.

Kilmer might be reprising the role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, who is one of Maverick’s primary rival in the original. Though there have been confusions about Kilmer’s inclusion in the movie, new reports suggest that the actor is going to suit up for the long-awaited sequel.

The details about the full plot are still kept under covers. But what we know about the officially titled movie 'Top Gun 2: Maverick' is that the movie will be centered on drone technology and the pilots, like Iceman and Maverick would serve as mentors to a younger, upcoming generation of fighter pilots.

Kilmer previously teased on Facebook that he was “offered #topgun2 – not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…” This post dates back to 2015 when he said yes to a script which was yet to take shape.

Moreover, he hadn’t even read the script. However, this particular project has undergone several reiterations since 2015 and it wasn’t clear if the latest version of the movie required Iceman at all. As per reports from TheWrap, after the previous Facebook post, Kilmer updated his Facebook post and that he was too early to make the announcement.

Further adding “This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the top gun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…”

While new reports are yet to be confirmed by Paramount, the rumor of Kilmer coming back as Iceman seems legit as Kilmer was spotted at the hotel in San Diego which the production team has been using since the film production began.

From all that is known from, it is quite evident that for a sequel that almost didn’t happen the excitement just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Adding to the excitement, Kenny Loggins has announced that he’d be more than happy to re-invent the soundtrack of “Danger Zone” for the sequel too.

Joseph Kosinski would be directing the sequel to Top Gun. He previously worked with Tom Cruise on in movies like 'Oblivion' and also directed 'Tron: Legacy for Disney'. Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig, and Justin Marks are working on the script.

The studio has been pretty hush-hush about any developments during the production and hence keeping this one close to the chest. So far all that was revealed to the public was Tom Cruise’s tweet announcing the start of production.

'Top Gun 2: Maverick' would hit the theaters on July 12, 2019.
