USA Today headquarters evacuated after reports of armed person, police say no evidence of any active shooter

The Fairfax County Police released a statement on its Twitter account saying that they were responding to the reports
UPDATED AUG 7, 2019

McLEAN, VIRGINIA: The headquarters of USA Today in McLean, Va., was evacuated on Wednesday, August 7, after reports of a person with a gun at the building.

Shortly after the reports, the Fairfax County Police released a statement on its Twitter account saying that they were responding to the reports.

"We are responding to reports of a man with a weapon at the Gannett Building located at 7950 Jones Branch Drive in McLean. Please avoid the area, updates to follow," the department tweeted.

Meanwhile, a federal law enforcement official told the USA Today that there was no evidence of any active shooter in the building or any acts of violence.

Police, however, warned people to avoid the area, which is near the Capital Beltway, major regional malls and office buildings in the Washington suburbs.

The publication company, on Wednesday, said that the building's alarms sounded and police squad cars arrived at the scene as employees in the building were being evacuated.

The newspaper's headquarters is located just 30 minutes from Washington DC and is the base for the majority of the outlet's more than 3,000 employees.

A picture of employees on the law outside of the building was posted on Twitter by Reporter Nathan Bomey.

Bomey also tweeted, saying: "Worth knowing: We share our building with several other unrelated tenants. There’s a major police presence on site, but can’t tell what’s happening."

Multiple videos shared on social media show lines of evacuees leaving the building and police helicopters circling overhead.

The latest development comes just days after the US reeled from two deadly mass shootings, which claimed over 30 lives in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio.
