'Two and a Half Men': Jon Cryer says Charlie Sheen's drug relapse was the 'first internet sh*tstorm'
It doesn't look like the internet is happy about Charlie Sheen any more what with Corey Feldman releasing his tell-all documentary 'My Truth: The Rape of 2 Coreys'.
Jon Cryer, however, has only good things to say about his 'Two and a Half Men' co-star.
Now, in an interview, Sheen's former co-star, who only has fond memories of working alongside him, said, "Charlie and I really hit it off. We had a great first few years on that show. It was incredibly smooth, we had a lovely time, it was working really well."
The 55-year-old actor speculated in the interview that he thinks Sheen resumed his drug habit after divorcing his then-wife Denise Richards. Sheen had met Richards on the set of 'Good Advice'. After dating for a short while, they got married in 2002. Three years later, she filed for divorce accusing Sheen of alcohol and drug abuse and threats of violence. Cryer says that Sheen was sober when the show first premiered, but everything went downhill when Sheen split from his wife in 2006 led to a relapse. "At first he could handle it, and he was still incredibly professional - and still lovely, by the way, to everybody on set - but you could just see that stuff was wearing on him."
It got to a point where the show's production was put on hiatus to enable Sheen to enrol in a rehab program - his third stint in one year. Before Sheen's contract was terminated in 2011, he entered a rehabilitation center and verbally attacked Chuck Lorre, the show's creator in a number of interviews. He didn't spare Cryer either who he called a 'turncoat' and a 'traitor' for not coming to his defense publicly.
Eventually, Sheen's contract was terminated and his character Charlie Harper was killed off.
"It became one of the first internet s***storms, plus there's the fact that all of our jobs are tied into this guy, and we're all his friends,' Cryer said. Following Sheen's exit, Ashton Kutcher replaced Sheen as a new character until the very end of the show.
But looking back, Cryer says he has no hard feelings against Sheen. "It was very, very strange and [there were] aspects of it that I absolutely hated, but you know, I'm thankful for the years that were great," he said.
In 2015, Cryer revealed the insane account of Sheen's infamous meltdown in his funny but candid memoir 'So That Happened." He referred to the infamous Brooke Mueller assault issue as well. Cryer didn’t know how to react when he heard of Sheen's arrest on Christmas Day 2009 on domestic assault charges against his third wife, Mueller. “Situations like this are rough on your sense of friendship and loyalty because the allegations are serious, yet you know Charlie and Brooke are a drug-troubled pair, and Charlie’s your longtime friend who was proud of his sobriety. . .” he said in his memoir.
However, backing his support of Sheen then as well was this excerpt where, after chronicling Sheen’s self-destruction on the 'Two and a Half Men' set, Cryer said he was more stunned by those who protested Sheen's firing. “An astounding number of people stood up for Charlie, as though people should be able to show up to work rarely, if at all, verbally abuse their co-workers publicly with anti-Semitic slurs, get arrested on a regular basis — as well as abuse drugs to the point where they can barely function — and not have their high-paying jobs threatened.”
