Parents rushed to pick their children up from school as soon as they learned of the incident. The attack and the evacuation that followed caused a backup of traffic in the area, which is reportedly one of the most crime-ridden in the state. Hundreds of students, staffers, and parents were seen crowded off the campus, trying to locate their loved ones.

The Alameda Country Sheriff's Office was among the first to respond to the scene. Deputies arrived to find the 13-year-old victim suffered from at least one gunshot wound. The child remains at the local hospital where they were rushed. Police have yet to share updates on the child's condition and it appears, as of now, that they are the sole victim of the attack. Local police are now probing what has come across as a seemingly premeditated strike.

This shooting comes a few months after a deadly massacre unfolded at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde. 18-year-old Salvador Ramos barricaded himself inside a classroom and slaughtered 19 students and two teachers. Police faced sharp criticism for allegedly failing to stop the shooting quickly enough and come to the victims' rescue on time. Ramos was shot dead by an off-duty Customs and Border Protection agent from an elite tactical unit.
