Trump wanted Melania to help design Space Force uniforms given her 'impeccable fashion sense'

Melania Trump could actually have a hand in designing the future uniform of President Donald Trump's Space Force - an idea that was explored as a mockery on the Steve Carell Netflix comedy 'Space Force.'

The phrase 'art imitating life' has never been more true in this case. In episode 4 of the comic series, the office of the first lady (whose is never named on the show) calls the assistant of Space Force's director, played by Carell, to inform that FLOTUS was interested in contributing her fashion skills to designing the uniforms of Space Force. Since no one has the guts to directly deny the first lady's wish, a bunch of prototypes gets delivered to the Space Force, which the staff members reluctantly model to be recorded and sent back for the president's wife's appeasement.

When the first set of prototypes gets rejected, FLOTUS' staff delivers another set of impractical uniforms to the Space Force headquarters, including ones sporting capes and the words 'Space Force' written with glitter and gems across the buttocks.

Obviously, the over-the-top costumes were meant to add humor to the storyline. But having the first lady picking a design for the new branch of the U.S. military was not only not far off from reality, it exactly mimicked what went down on January 15 during Trump's meeting with General John "Jay" Raymond, chief of space operations, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and other military leaders.

According to a story on the inner workings of the Space Force published by Time magazine, Trump suggested Melania "should help design Space Force uniforms because of her impeccable fashion sense.'' He was alluding to his wife's former career as a model that saw her attending an array of elite fashion shows which he felt made her a natural fit for the job.

So far Space Force, in real life, which was officially activated December 20, 2019, has been nationally speculated upon, mainly because no one knows what it does or what it is supposed to be doing. Despite many thinking the branch was nothing more than a joke at this point, Raymond has insisted that any news is good news and the profile of the mission will only be raised by attention. “We have a pop–culture intrigue that we need to capitalize on,” he told Time magazine.

To that end, he also even considered making a guest appearance on the Netflix series. “We’ve got some education to do for the average Americans on just how reliant their lives are on space capabilities,” Raymond said.

Till now, the Space Force has debuted a service seal, logo, and utility uniform name tape. And out of the three, the first two which use the delta symbol, have been mocked by Twitter users who were quick to point out the insignia's uncanny resemblance to the 'Star Trek' Starfleet Command logo. Some of the other decisions that are still pending include a dress uniform, insignia and unit patches, and a rank structure. There is also the question of what the Space Force members should be called.
