Trump closes his eyes and puckers up to kiss Angela Merkel and Brigitte Macron, and it looks so awkward
US President Donald Trump's awkward handshakes with world leaders where he seems to forcibly yank them towards him have already generated hundreds of memes on the internet, and the latest G7 summit might just provide social media users with further ammo.
The second day of the summit, which kicked off on August 24 in Biarritz, Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France saw world leaders and their spouses head to dinner at the Hotel du Palais. And, cameras didn't miss to click POTUS as they captured the moment when Trump seemed to share an awkward kiss with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Snaps also showed French President Emmanuel Macron's wife Brigitte reciprocating the greeting and reaching up to give Trump a traditional European kiss, according to the Daily Mail.
Melania Trump turned heads at the summit with her red sleeveless dress as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave her a welcoming kiss on the cheek.
But the photo ops weren't quite done yet. On the itinerary was a "family photo" where all the world leaders and their spouses posed for a group picture with guests.
Besides the leaders of the G7 nations — the US, Canada, France, Germany, UK, Japan, and Italy — leaders of several African nations, Australian prime minister Scott Morrison, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera were also present.
Trump, who was sporting a crisp dark blue suit and a blue and white striped tie with an American flag pin, and Melania could be seen holding hands on the risers as the other leaders gathered around them for the photo op.
Merkel, the only female leader in the group, wore a pantsuit with a white blazer and black pant and stood close to the center. Unlike the others, who posed diligently for the photo, the 65-year-old was hardly looking at the camera and deep in conversation with Macron.
However, Trump's and Melania's photo duties didn't end there. After the group picture, Macron seemingly asked Trump for another picture, with Pinera and his wife Cecilia Morel joining them for the snap as well.
Afterward, Trump went on to have bilateral meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and Trudeau and announced a potential trade deal with Japan at a separate meeting later.
Meanwhile, Melania attended a spouses program where she and Brigitte led their fellow G7 wives on a tour of the traditional Basque village close to the summit.
The summit kicked off on Saturday evening and is scheduled to wind up on Monday, August 26, with a world leaders' press conference.
