President Donald Trump sent social media into a 'meltdown' as news of his nomination for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize surfaced just weeks after he helped broker peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Trump was lauded by Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian parliament who submitted the nomination, for Trump's pathbreaking efforts towards calming tensions and resolving conflicts across the globe, Fox News reported.

Tybring-Gjedde, a four-term member of parliament who also serves as chairman of the Norwegian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, told Fox News that the president has "done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees."

In his nomination letter to the Nobel Committee, Tybring-Gjedde said Trump had played a key role in renewing relations between Israel and the UAE. “As it is expected that other Middle Eastern countries will follow in the footsteps of the UAE, this agreement could be a game-changer that will turn the Middle East into a region of cooperation and prosperity,” he wrote.

"That is a very, very important region in the world," Gjedde said. "And all efforts that lead to peace in that region should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and also for Donald J Trump." This is not the first time that Gjedde has nominated Trump for the prestigious award. He was the one who nominated him for the same prize in 2018 after the Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. At the time the Norwegian lawmaker said it was an "honorable" achievement.

However, Twitter, the president's favorite microblogging platform, appeared rather divided on his nomination. Trump received intense backlash from his critics.

"To those getting excited about Trump being nominated for Nobel Peace Prize, it only takes one parliamentarian to nominate. He joins the esteemed list of nominees that include Hitler, Stalin & Mussolini. Even Michael Jackson! What is harder to do is win — Obama did," British solicitor Nazir Afzal tweeted.

"At first I thought WTF? But then I found out that so have Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini been nominated, so, you know... Donald Trump nominated for Nobel Peace Prize," DJ Doc Scott wrote.

"Trump* Nobel Peace Prize! LOL Tybring-Gjedde wants Anti-Immigration and Massive Tax Reduction (I'm sure for the rich ONLY — per SOP). So Basically — Another Fascist Plutocrat. Awaiting the INEVITABLE financial scandal between him and Trump* to surface in 3, 2, 1..." Democratic congressional candidate Mark Judson chimed in.

"I’ll have a meltdown when the @NobelPrize actually gives Trump the Nobel peace prize because in that case the prize itself & the human race are worth less than the metal it is made from," another disappointed user added.

Meanwhile, Trump supporters touted the latest proverbial feather in the Republican president's cap and mocked his critics. "Now that Trump has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize... Countdown to the left accusing the people who nominated him of being 'Russian Assets' and 'Putin Puppets' in 3...2...1..." author and comedian Tim Young quipped.

"'@realDonaldTrump nominated for #NobelPrize for brokering middle East deal! & let's not forget his involvement in calming the North Korean situation!" former British MEP James Wells wrote.
