Trump to honor Jon Voight with prestigious National Medal of Arts after actor hailed him as 'the greatest president of this century'
President Donald Trump is set to honor Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight with a prestigious national honor after he hailed the Republican as "the greatest president of this century." Voight is among the group of artists and philanthropists who are being honored by Trump for their contributions in their fields.
Voight will be one of the first recipients of the National Medal of Arts ever since Trump took office. The 80-year-old, who is actress Angelina Jolie's father, had taken to Twitter in August this year, posting a video of himself online, lashing out at the "radical left" and their "hate... like a venom."
"Let us pray for this country that President Trump will take on four more years of his strength, devotion, knowledge of truths. And all that doubt and have extreme hate and anger toward President Trump, may they be shown differently, that President Trump is the greatest president of this century," the 'Midnight Cowboy' actor had tweeted. President Trump responded to his tweet, writing: "Thank you Jon, working hard!"
Voight, in September, also doubled down on an impeachment investigation against Trump, calling the effort against Trump "a war against truths and the highest nobleman who has defended our country."
Other recipients of the prestigious awards include singer and musician Alison Krauss, who will receive the National Medal of Arts, while mystery writer James Patterson is among the four people set to receive the National Humanities Medal. Trump will also honor the musicians of the US military who entertain at White House events frequently. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the White House on Thursday.
Reports state that although these honors were an annual affair during previous administrations, the Trump administration has not held a single such event ever since President Trump took office in January 2017, until now. The last arts and humanities medals were awarded by President Barack Obama in September 2016.
