Trump claims Sidney Powell was 'not my attorney' after her Georgia election interference plea deal, Internet ready with receipts

MIAMI, FLORIDA: Former President Donald Trump made a striking claim on Sunday, October 22, asserting that Sidney Powell, known for her infamous "Release the Kraken" slogan, was never his attorney.

This statement came just days after Powell reached a plea deal in the Georgia election interference case. However, critics on social media pulled up an old post that suggested otherwise.

Trump's denial and accusations of election rigging

In a Truth Social post, Trump stated, "MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS," while continuing to falsely assert that the 2020 presidential election was rigged and stolen. He described Powell as "one of millions and millions of people" who believed the election was fraudulent.

“Sidney Powell was one of millions and millions of people who thought, and in ever increasing numbers still think, correctly, that the 2020 Presidential Election was RIGGED & STOLLEN, AND OUR COUNTRY IS BEING ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED BECAUSE OF IT!!! Despite the Fake News reports to the contrary, and without even reaching out to ask the Trump Campaign, MS. POWELL WAS NOT MY ATTORNEY, AND NEVER WAS,” Trump wrote on Sunday.

Trump did, however, commended Powell for her role in representing former national security adviser Michael Flynn during the 2019 investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller. He criticized Flynn's "ruthless" prosecution.

“Ms. Powell did a valiant job of representing a very unfairly treated and governmentally abused General Mike Flynn, but to no avail,” Trump continued. “His prosecution, despite the facts, was ruthless.”

Trump's denial of Powell's association with his legal team appeared to contradict his previous statements. In November 2020, he had announced on X (then Twitter) that Powell would join a team led by his personal attorney, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

“I look forward to Mayor Giuliani spearheading the legal effort to defend OUR RIGHT to FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS! Rudy Giuliani, Joseph diGenova, Victoria Toensing, Sidney Powell, and Jenna Ellis, a truly great team, added to our other wonderful lawyers and representatives,” he wrote at the time.

Social media reactions to Trump's claim

Critics swiftly shared screenshots of that post, highlighting Trump's alleged inconsistency. Laura Loomer, a pro-Trump activist, shared the former president's recent statement about Powell, which prompted critics to point out the earlier declaration.

Social media users expressed their skepticism and humor, with some waiting for the promised "Kraken" to be unleashed and others questioning Trump's treatment of associates.

"It's been 3 years and I'm still waiting on the Kraken to be released. Lol lmao even," one quipped.

"All those lawyers will eventually flip It's not worth doing time to protect Trump," another wrote.

"Name 1 person who parted their ways with Trump and he didn’t immediately vilify and question their competency! Just 1? Genuinely curious," someone else added.

"Too late for disassociation, Donnie. It's on record. Speaking of which, I need to get more popcorn before tomorrow..." another chimed in.

Sidney Powell's guilty plea and sentencing

The controversy follows Sidney Powell's guilty plea in the Georgia 2020 election interference case. She was sentenced to six months of probation, a $6,000 fine, and $2,700 in restitution.

Powell is also required to issue an apology letter to Georgia residents. Scott Hall, a bail bondsman, had previously pleaded guilty to similar charges in the same case.

Trump, who is currently the front-runner in the GOP 2024 presidential field, along with 16 other co-defendants, maintains their innocence in the ongoing legal proceedings related to the Georgia election interference case, The Hill reported.
