Trump accuses Biden of lying, says his son Hunter's company received $3 million from Ukraine under former VP's watch
President Donald Trump, on Sunday, accused former Vice President and his 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden of lying about not having spoken to his son Hunter about his foreign dealings.
The president made the statement while defending his July 25 call with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky after allegations emerged that he had pressed the Ukrainian leader to investigate Biden's son during their conversation.
Hunter, an attorney who specializes in health care and renewable energy, has come under intense scrutiny over his business dealings with Ukraine and China, particularly in light of Joe's bid for the White House. Joe Biden's involvement in the said business dealings has also seen allegations with regards to his capacity as the Vice President under President Barack Obama.
Trump, who described his conversation with the Ukrainian leader as "perfect," said that his phone call with Zelenzky covered multiple topics, including congratulation him on his election victory, and discussing corruption in Ukraine. The talks constituted "largely the fact that we don’t want our people like Vice President Biden and his son [contributing] to the corruption already in Ukraine, and Ukraine has got a lot of problems," Trump said, according to the New York Post.
The Republican also said that what wasn't "perfect" about the call was "the horrible thing that Joe Biden said, and now he made a lie when said he never spoke to his son."
The president also slammed the whistleblower who reported the controversial conversation to the inspector general of the intelligence community. Trump said that the whistleblower put out "false alarms," adding that "you can’t have that happen to a president of the United States."
Hunter, in an interview with the New Yorker in July, had said that he and his father had an agreement that he would not talk about who he was lobbying and his father would not ask about his clients.
However, he admitted that his father talked to him about his position with Burisma Holdings "just once." Hunter's company, according to a New York Post op-ed, allegedly received over $3 million during a 14-month period when his father was the point person on Ukraine policy for the Obama administration.
Biden, however, clapped back at Trump's allegations on Sunday, and denied talking to his son about "overseas business dealings" and suggested that "Trump should be investigated" over the whistleblower's report.
