'Treadstone': From Bentley fate to Doug's target, here are 6 questions that episode 3 of the spy thriller needs to answer
‘Treadstone’, the USA Network’s latest spy thriller, is a spinoff from the 'Bourne' series written by Robert Ludlum.
The show, that does not follow Jason Bourne's story, runs on two separate timelines: one from the 1970s, at the height of the Cold War, and the other during the present day.
Of course, each new episode raises more questions than it answers. Here are six questions that we hope the third episode manages to answer:
Where does Bentley run off to and how does he plan to explain his actions to the CIA?
After John Randolph Bentley (Jeremy Irvine) manages to escape the Soviet facility where he was experimented upon with hypnosis drugs by the KGB, he manages to make contact with the CIA.
However, when his motives are questioned (if he has, in fact, turned towards the Russians), he goes on a rampage and escapes the building, knocking out several operatives in his wake. Where can he seek refuge with both Petra (and the KGB) and the American government after him?
Has Bentley turned?
At the CIA headquarters, Bentley is asked if he, in fact, managed to complete his mission, or was he simply allowed to, by the Soviet, in order to pass him off as a credible American spy?
He was, after all, tortured for almost nine months, of which Bentley only remembers a week. Is it possible that Petra let Bentley escape on purpose and he is now a Russian sleeper agent inside the CIA?
Why was Petra forgotten?
We see the older Petra (Gabrielle Scharnitzky) murder her husband after he accidentally discovers a missile silo on their farm — a silo that holds a nuclear weapon called Stiletto 6.
However, when Petra tries to contact her handlers, she realizes they are no longer there. Have the Russians actually forgotten about this secret weapon and its guardian? Or are they just biding time? What will Petra discover when she meets her old "friends" in Moscow.
What does Colonel Shin want?
In the second episode of 'Treadstone', we discover that it was Colonel Shin who activates SoYun (Han Hyo-Joo) to assassinate General Kwon. He is the one who gives the toy to SoYun's son that leads her to "wake up".
He is also the one who promotes her husband for ratting on General Kwon. The real questions are, how did he know SoYun was a "Cicada" and what exactly is his endgame here?
Why go after General Kwon's daughter?
It is unlikely that a teenage school student studying in Paris would know anything about Treadstone, "Cicadas" or "Blackbriar". So why try and assassinate her as well? Does the locket Tara Coleman (Tracy Ifeachor) hand her over have a special significance?
Who is Doug's target?
So far, the most mysterious storyline in the show is the one involving Doug McKenna (Brian J Smith). Nothing has been revealed about the lady who makes multiple attempts to "wake" him up.
Nothing has been revealed about the target whose photo he holds — a photo with an address on the back, similar to how SoYun was instructed to kill General Kwon.
