Transgender runners win top two spots in Connecticut high school's female track event sparking controversy
Two transgender teenagers finished first and second at the Connecticut high school championship track, rekindling a controversy about rules allowing transgender athletes to compete with their cisgender peers.
According to the Associated Press, Terry Miller of Bloomfield High School and Andraya Yearwood of Cromwell High School, both 17, finished first and second respectively at the 55-meter dash at the state open indoor track championships this past month.
The former finished the race in 6.95 seconds, a girls' state indoor record, while the latter crossed the line in 7.01 seconds. The athlete who finished third, who is cisgender, took 7.23 seconds.
Miller also won the 300-meter sprint indoors this season, and the pair — who are currently transitioning to female and are taking hormone therapies for the same — reportedly topped the 100-meter state outdoor championships as well last year.
