'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' Season 2: Matice is the first major casualty in the series, but his death justifiably rounds out his character arc
'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' season 1 took its time in establishing each of its major characters and one of them was John Hoogenakker's Matice. The black Ops man for the CIA was instrumental in season 1 when he raided Mousa Bin Suleiman's (Ali Suliman) compound and for also taking care of the last of the terrorists. Season 2 saw him deployed on a mission to the Venezuelan jungle on an IRS mission that goes full south and the team ends up leaving Marcus (Jovan Adepo) behind.
Matice plans a rescue mission and while they manage to find Marcus, they come under heavy fire by President Reyes' (Jordi Mulla) men who are ordered to neutralize the "Americans" from their soil. In an evasive maneuver, Matice peels away from the team and distracts the Venezuelan soldiers. The move ends sadly for the charismatic soldier after he runs out of ammo and is shot to death after an act of defiance. (He does flip the bird to the soldiers anyway)
His death was also the first when it comes to a major character in the series. Given Jim Greer's (Wendell Pierce) heart condition, he was looked at as the most likely to meet his maker. While Jack Ryan aficionados will be sad, Matice's character arc rounds up perfectly considering season 3 will see a creative team overhaul. If it's any consolation, they have a character similar to him in Adepo's Marcus and should season 3 have a Black Ops role, maybe we might see the former Navy crewman fill in Matice's boots.
It was an unexpected turn. Most fans pegged Allan Hawco's character, Coyote, who was a member of Matice's team to be a casualty of war, or maybe even Marcus, However, his death adds to the script, even though it's unfortunate.
'Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan' Season 2 is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
