LOS ANGELES, CALFORNIA: There has been a recent buzz on the internet about a theory related to the use of smartphones in the popular HBO series, 'Succession'. A TikTok user with the handle @iwannabeonline gained a lot of attention when he posted a video showing that three of the main characters, Kendall, Roman, and Greg, use iPhones while Tom uses a Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

The video captioned "Not everyone using Apple phones [except] Tom. IYKYK" suggested that Apple doesn't allow villains to use iPhones, and therefore Tom's use of a Samsung phone could mean he's a bad guy. The theory has generated a lot of interest among fans as the show's final season approaches its end.

Are villains not allowed to use iPhones?

In 2020, Rian Johnson, the director of the movie 'Knives Out', revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that Apple has a rule prohibiting villains from using iPhones on camera. He also explained that iPhones used in films or TV shows cannot have cases on them. Johnson's comments sparked speculation among fans about the significance of the characters' phone choices in 'Succession'.

In the show's latest episode, Tom was the only character without an iPhone, which could indicate that he is the villain, according to the Apple rule. However, Johnson also acknowledged that the use of a Samsung phone by Tom may be a production design choice and not necessarily a plot point. Despite this, fans have noted that Tom has aligned himself with the "old guard" in the show, rather than with Shiv, his estranged wife, who notably uses an iPhone.

What happens in 'Succession'?

In the third episode of Succession, titled "Connor's Wedding," viewers may have noticed that the main characters Kendall, Shiv, Roman, and Cousin Greg all use iPhones, while Tom and Gerri are seen using Android handsets. This detail became more apparent in the episode, which focused heavily on a phone call. Interestingly, Roman, who previously didn't use an iPhone, now has one after getting closer to the Roy siblings.

In 2021, a fan pointed out the significance of iPhone use in the show, suggesting that it could indicate who the "good" and "bad" characters are. If the iPhone theory is correct, the Roy kids and Greg are the ones who will be cheering this season, while Tom and Gerri will be the villains. With the final season still unfolding, it remains to be seen whether this theory will hold up as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

All seasons of 'Succession' are ready to stream on HBO MAX.
