‘This Is Us’ Season 5 Episode 4: Was Kate pregnant with Marc's baby? This theory suggests he ‘raped’ her
‘This Is Us’ has a way of throwing huge shocks in installments. Episode 4 ‘Honestly’ had a bundle of surprises waiting for fans and a huge trauma for teen Kate Pearson (Hannah Zeile) that we have never heard about and no one knows. Kate (Chrissy Metz) is all set for a new beginning with Toby Damon (Chris Sullivan) as they plan to adopt a new baby.
After spending some time with the new "single mother" Ellie (Annie Funke), Kate hears some tragic stories from her past. Her husband Doug, who is their daughter Willow's father, died of cancer and, soon after, a horror Match.com date-turned-one-night stand got Ellie pregnant. With all the emotions that overpowered Kate, she decided to come clean about a secret she guarded for most of her life.
It happens after Kate decides to call the baby Chloe and that rubs off the wrong way on Ellie. While Kate thinks Ellie is having "second thoughts", Ellie narrates a tragic tale. A high school classmate named Chloe backbit about her and sabotaged her relationship before she even started dating her husband. So, while she loves Kate and Toby, she doesn't want that name for the little one. When Ellie talks about her regret for the one-night stand and the fact that abortion crossed her mind too, Kate mulls over memories from her past.
In a flashback, we see young Kate going to the washroom and taking a pregnancy test. It happens right after Rebecca (Mandy Moore) comes to check up on her and Kate confirms she wants to stay home instead of going for a family trip. To her horror, the pregnancy test is positive! So what really happened with Kate? Did she get pregnant with Marc (Austin Abrams) after consensual sex or did he rape her?
One Reddit fan guessed it right. "I do wonder if Kate’s trauma is to do with Marc - the episode when Rebecca leaves her home alone to visit Kevin in NYC always made me think they were going to cut to a scene that showed Kate was secretly back with Marc. And maybe something bad happens and she never tells anyone because she is embarrassed about going back to him?" the comment read. Another said, "I don't think she is getting back with him. I think he's gonna show up uninvited and rape her."
The two-hour episode of ‘This Is Us’ premiered on Tuesday, October 27, at 9 pm ET on NBC. Following that, one-hour episodes aired weekly. Now, the rest of the episodes starting from Season 5 Episode 5 will be back in January 2021.
