Michelle Obama gets veggies from White House kitchen garden, Internet thankful Melania Trump didn't rip it out

First lady Jill Biden sent a care package for Michelle and which triggered a discussion about contribution of first ladies in maintaining White House gardens

There is no doubt that former first lady Michelle Obama is a queen. The internet has bestowed upon her the title with much love and deliberation. But right now, it is the garden she planted in the White House during her time as FLOTUS that is the hot topic in town. First lady Jill Biden recently sent a care package from the White House garden to her friend and former first lady. Obama posted a picture of the basket on Instagram, writing, “So thankful for this beautiful care package from our amazing @FLOTUS! These fresh veggies from the White House Kitchen Garden were such a wonderful - and delicious- surprise. Love you, Jill!” To which, Jill responded, "Food is love."

Between Michelle and Jill, there was one person who ensured that the White House garden lived to be bountiful. According to a recent report in Vanity Fair, instead of destroying Michelle's vegetable garden as most speculated, her successor Melania Trump chose to publicly harvest the vegetables, and also add "cement reinforcements to help make the garden permanent as one of her first tasks as FLOTUS in 2017". At the time, surrounded by children from a local Boys and Girls Club, she had reportedly said, "I'm a big believer in healthy eating…it encourages a healthy mind and body". 

Michelle's idea behind the garden, which she planted in 2009, was making a statement about child nutrition. In her 2012 book 'American Grown', Michelle explained the idea behind the garden. "As both a mother and a first lady, I was alarmed about reports of skyrocketing childhood obesity rates and the dire consequences for our children's health. And I hoped this garden would begin a conversation about this issue- a conversation about the food we eat, the lives we lead, and how all of that affects our children," she wrote. 

The 2,800 square foot garden on the South Lawn provides locally-grown food for the first family and White House guests. It also serves as a model for how food can be grown at home. Melania might not have used the garden much during her time in the White House, but one of her advisors expressed her commitment to its upkeep shortly after her husband was inaugurated. "As a mother and as the first lady of this country, Mrs Trump is committed to the preservation and continuation of the White House Gardens, specifically the first lady's Kitchen Garden and the Rose Garden,” the statement from her had said.

On social media, many were surprised to discover everything that Melania did for the garden. "Gee, I would have thought the evil Melania would have had Michelle's garden ripped up out of spite. Oh, wait, Melania is a classy woman...I forgot," one tweeted. "I’m half surprised Melania didn’t pour golden concrete over Michelle’s veggie garden," another tweeted. 

But Melania's supporters have a different opinion. "This is awful that the FLOTUS paid to have our fresh produce sent and delivered to her best friend Michelle Obama.This is wasted money and it done just for show to get attention that is enjoying the former special former First Lady Melania Trumps’ staff that maintain our garden." Many did not care to mince their words. "Isn't that sweet--I guess Michelle can't afford to buy her own vegetables. She has to depend on them coming from a garden that Melania planted. Forget about those disadvantaged and those unemployed by her husbands policies who would benefit from a few fresh vegetables." Another one finally added, "I want to set something straight here. Michelle Obama destroyed the Rose Garden. Melania Trump FIXED the Rose Garden. Now Jill Biden is going to spend your money to destroy it again."
