Spoilers for 'The Walking Dead' Season 10

It's never been a good time for the survivors of 'The Walking Dead,' but at the moment, things may be more dire than they've ever been. In the midst of building towards a future, and a home worth fighting for, the survivors have all gotten embroiled in a war with the barbaric Whisperers and what's more, they're having to do it without the aid of their leader, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). Things have gone from bad to worse, despite the killing of Alpha (Samantha Norton) as the Hilltop's been destroyed, lives were lost, Beta (Ryan Hurst) is after them and the survivors are on the run barely keeping their heads above water.

With Michonne (Danai Gurira) away, looking for Rick, no one else has stepped up into a leadership position for the group and the survivors are suffering for it. While the survivors have never had a formal government or ever really voted to put Rick in charge, his leadership position was still effective in keeping the group safe. There were always disagreements, but Rick always managed to keep the group together and the survivors now need someone to fill in that role.

While the group has been making the best of a very bad situation, they've been largely just reacting to things, one event after another. It's past time the group designate someone to make plans and think a few steps ahead beyond just survival. Daryl (Norman Reedus) seems like the most obvious choice, though of course, the group wouldn't be wrong in picking Exekiel (Khary Payton) to take charge as well. Whatever the case may be, it's important they pick one fast. While they've so far managed to make things work together, and formulate plans without too much ego, panic or prejudice getting in the way, it's only a matter of time before disagreements rise and split the survivors, leaving whatever threats there are remaining to pick the survivors off, one by one.

If the group survives Beta's latest attack, they're going to need to seriously rethink how they're going to work as a group. As far as they know, Rick may never return and the best way to honor his memory is to make sure that everyone is kept safe.

The final episode of 'The Walking Dead' Season 10 has been indefinitely delayed.
