UNIVERSAL CITY, CALIFORNIA: As ‘The Voice’ battles continue, viewers can truly feel the heat of it as some crowd-favorites grace the stage with their fabulous vocals and soulful performances. But it’s the underdogs that catch all the attention, just like Hillary Torchiana, who seemed to win hearts after her battle with Kevin Hawkins.

Hillary and Keven battled it out by belting coach John Legend’s song, ‘Preach’. Their coach, Blake Shelton, was extremely concerned about how John would react upon hearing his own song during the battle rounds. But lucky for Blake, John was the biggest fan of Kevin and Hillary’s glorious duet, even calling it full of “love” and “passion.” Even judges Gwen Stefani and Camila Cabello were impressed by the duo. But in the end, Blake had to make a choice, and with a heavy heart, the country maestro picked Kevin. Here’s what fans thought about the whole ordeal. Watch the duo's performance below.

Hillary’s attempt to keep up with four-chair-turner Kevin was most noticeable in the battle. Kevin is one of the contestants that fans have rooted for and one for whom even the coaches have fought over. It is no surprise that the piano teacher has some superb vocal chops, so Hillary, who had only received a single turn from Blake during her audition, fought against quite a big fish. But she went all out and even impressed judges and fans with her improved performance. Blake unsurprisingly chose Kevin but ultimately chose not to save Hillary, much to many fans’ surprise and shock.

Fans commented on their surprise on the YouTube clip of the performance as many expressed their observations of Hillary’s improved abilities. “I can’t believe she didn’t get stolen or saved.. She was SOOO good!!” a fan commented. At the same time, another pointed out how both were good contestants, saying, “Two powerful singers. Both needed on the voice.” Another noted Kevin’s superior vocals, stating, “Both of them are so good, but this guy is incredible, he’s amazing.”

And a fan was surprised by the duo’s capabilities and noted, “Great job to both. I thought the key fit Kevin’s voice better, but Hillary really surprised me with how well she could go low, and then launch into that piercing upper range of hers. A lot of dynamic. Kevin does a great job of 'hiding is limit'. its not at all clear when he’s reaching the upper limits of his range. An underrated skill as a singer.” One noted Hillary’s ability to keep up with Kevin and penned, “I really thought Hillary would get crushed but she didn’t. Kevin won this no doubt tho”. While another added, “She should’ve been saved.” And one noted that it was because of the song choice, saying, “Wrong song for Hillary.”

‘The Voice’ Season 22 airs every Monday and Tuesday at 8/7c on NBC.
