'The View': Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Biden did nothing to empower Black community, Sunny Hostin fires back

Hostin fired back at Sanders, “This is happening in Trump’s America! This is not Joe Biden’s America; this is Trump’s America! This is happening under your president’s watch!”

On the Tuesday, September 8, episode of the ABC daytime talk show ‘The View’, things went off the rails with former White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders in the mix. On the show, Sanders was grilled by the show’s co-hosts over The Atlantic’s report that President Donald Trump insulted soldiers, as well as the president’s response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake.

Sanders said, “I sat in the Oval Office when the president called to offer condolences to parents whose sons had been killed in the line of duty. That takes a toll on a person. The president did that, and I watched that, and I saw his heart in those moments. I also saw him overseas make us take a separate stop when we were going to stop at two o’clock in the morning and wanted to visit the troops.”

“On the instance that was written about in the Atlantic, I was one of the few people that were in the room. I’m not an anonymous source. I’m going on the record and I’m telling you it didn’t happen,” she continued. “That’s not who this president is and that’s not how he feels about the men and women who serve in our military.”

Sanders insisted that she has never witnessed President Trump be anything but respectful towards the military. “After spending nearly every single day for two-and-a-half years with the president I can tell you I witnessed firsthand the president’s respect and admiration for the men and women of our armed forces.”

Sunny Hostin Hostin repeatedly asked Sanders why Trump has not reached out to Blake. Sanders replied, “I think he certainly could. I don’t have a problem with him doing that and I think it would be a nice thing for him to do,” to which Hostin once again asked, “Why didn’t he?”

“You’ll have to ask the president, but what I can tell you that he has done is lead on having safe communities,” Sanders responded. “No child in America, whether they are Black, White, Brown, or any other color should be afraid to walk down the streets in this country and that is something the president has been strong on and Vice President Biden has been incredibly weak on.”

“He did speak to Jacob Blake though,” Hostin retorted, prompting Sanders to claim, “But he’s done nothing to empower the Black community.” Hostin fired back, “This is happening in Trump’s America! This is not Joe Biden’s America; this is Trump’s America! This is happening under your president’s watch!”

Co-host Meghan McCain took over the questioning and brought into the conversation her father John McCain. “The problem is, Sarah, you were serving in the White House when President Trump decided to not have the flags raised when my father passed, which had very great outrage,” McCain said. “You also probably know that I have spoken with President Trump on the phone in the past about issues like this. I think he’s aware that there has been serious damage done by the criticism not only by my family, because it’s not just about my family, but like I said, about the Khans and Col. Vindman.”

“The problem with the story is it seems like something he would do,” she continued. “And I don’t doubt that you’ve had experiences and I’ve seen videos with President Trump and troops and his family. But this has not been my experience. For me and my brothers who serve, we do not feel respected. We’re a military family that doesn’t feel respected by this president.”

“I understand you have to do a job because you are his surrogate and you are his supporter,” McCain concluded. “But at least concede that it has to be very uncomfortable to have this kind of conversation with me right now.”

On social media, Sanders’ appearance on the show caused a stir. Her comments on Blake, in particular, received blowback. One Twitter user wrote, “What does Sarah Sanders know about empowering the black community? #TheView.”

While another Twitter user said, “I am always intrigued when a white person tries to speak for the entire Black community. #theview.”

A Twitter user noted, “Is it me or is Sanders still acting like Trump's press sec? she's giving us nothing but non-answers and campaign schtick! #TheView.”

Twitter users were all praises for Whoopi Goldberg and Hostin, however. Despite Sanders’ repeated defense of Trump, Goldberg got the last word on the subject. She said, “And I can say from my experience having watched him over and over and over, I totally disagree with you.” One Twitter user wrote, “Whoopi letting Sarah Huckabee Sanders know she ain’t with the bs #TheView.”

Another fan of the show said, “Joy and Sunny after dragging Sarah Sanders and all her lies #TheView.”
