'The Third Day' Episode 3 Preview: A delirious Sam confronts the ghost of his dead son
Spoilers for 'The Third Day' Season 1 Episode 3 'Sunday - The Ghost'
Episode 2 of HBO's miniseries 'The Third Day' ended on an ambiguous note. This should hardly come as surprising given the nature of the show. Sam (Jude Law) finds himself the victim of a sudden attack. He can't seem to do much to escape the situation because he was lured into this. After Mrs Martin (Emily Watson), the suspicious innkeeper takes Sam away from the festival and to a large, empty field, Larry shows up. Mrs Martin had told him that she's taking him away from the man who wants to kill him but then got Sam straight to him. Larry hits Sam with on the head with a crowbar and covers his head with a sack. We see blood ooze out from where Sam's head should be, which raises the question if he's dead for good or only gravely injured.
At the same time, we know that Sam has been dealing with hallucinations. How much of this attack is true cannot be vouched for. After all, the £40,000 cash that he claimed were stolen from his office turned out to be with him only. He had popped acid with Jess (Katherine Waterston) just before Mrs Martin showed up. So perhaps that is a role to play too.
The synopsis of the upcoming episode does not suggest that he is dead though. According to the official synopsis of Episode 3 titled 'Sunday - the Ghost', Sam is "shocked to learn the truth about his connection to Osea and the islanders' intentions for his future. Later, in a fight for his life, Sam tries desperately to escape their clutches and make it back to the mainland in one piece."
Sam has tried to leave Osea Island at least twice or thrice now since getting here. But each time, his plan is thwarted - either that or he chooses to stay back. Either way, we can tell that staying back at Osea hasn't been the best of ideas for him.
Written by Dennis Kelly, directed by Marc Munden, this is going to be the last episode directed by Munden. Philippa Lowthorpe is set to direct the next three episodes categorized as 'Winter'. Going by the synopsis of the upcoming episode, we can tell that Sam is alive for at least that episode. Who knows whether he will be able to get off the island at all.
'The Third Day' airs 9-10pm EST on HBO. The episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max following the airing.
