BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA: 'The Tattooist of Auschwitz' is streaming on Peacock from May 2, 2024, and the six-episode long series ends on a bittersweet note for the protagonists Lali (Jonah Hauer-King) and Gita (Anna Próchniak)

The series directed by Tali Shalom-Ezer is based on a book of the same name by Heather Morris, who also appears as a character in this series. It chronicles the adversities of the Auschwitz concentration camp and how love can prosper in the unlikeliest of circumstances.

In the final episode of the series, both Lali and Gita have escaped Auschwitz after Russians defeat the Nazis in war. Both of them however are separated and find their way back to each other. What happens at the end of the series? Do Lali and Gita reunite? Does Heather Morris finish her story? Here we explain the end of 'The Tattooist of Auschwitz'

Lali and Gita finally reunite in Bratislava

Lali is in Austria after escaping from the camp and works for the Russian soldiers as a pimp trying to earn their trust. Once he earns their trust, he finds a way to escape to Slovakia where he meets his sister Goldie (Katie Bernstein).

Gita on the other hand hides in a sympathetic Polish woman's house and along with the other girls braves the daily fight against Russian soldiers who attempt to rape them.

Deeply in love, Lali and Gita begin their search for each other and find each other in Bratislava.

Lali and Gita don't have the quintessential happy marriage

Lali and Gita do not have the perfect end despite getting married and living with each other for over six decades. They are haunted by the ghosts of their time in Auschwitz and what they had to do to get out of there.

They relocate to Australia under new identities but Gita misses being in Europe. She also hates it that Lali has a soft corner for Stefan Baretzki (Jonas Nay) who thought of Lali as a brother to him before he died.

Lali battles with his guilt of working for the Russians as a pimp along with the other things he had to do for survival. He writes a letter to the German Embassy calling Stefan a murderer despite his contribution to Lali's freedom.

Heather Morris makes it a mission to publish Lali's story

After Lali died in peace in 2006, Heather Morris finished her book but it took her 11 years to find a publisher for it. Lali asks her to exclude the parts about the problems in Lali and Gita's marriage.

Lali lives his life still dealing with hallucinations about the time spent in the camp, and his guilt about Stefan. He also hallucinates Gita from time to time.
