Contains spoilers for 'The Sympathizer'
SAIGON, VIETNAM: HBO Max's latest release, 'The Sympathizer' starts off with a thrilling premise. The series introduces Hoa Xuande as the Captain, who serves in the South Vietnamese Army.
His intentions and true identity come under scrutiny as we see him in a prison where he is asked to make a confession.
Leaving viewers confused about his current whereabouts, the series dives into the past and showcases the Captain's double life as a North Vietnam plant in the South Vietnam army.
How does the Captain betray the General in HBO's 'The Sympathizer'?
The Captain lives in the General's house and works closely with him. This gives him easy access to confidential information about the South Vietnam army, which he passes off to the North.
In the pilot episode, we see the Special Police apprehending a woman, who also works for North Vietnam.
She is beaten up and tortured to get a special roll of film, which she eventually swallows to hide from the South Vietnamese soldiers.
She is even questioned about her "contact" but she refuses to give away any information. Interestingly, her "contact" is the Captain himself.
Several days earlier, the Captain received a request from his Northern contact and brother, Man (Duy Nguyen) to retrieve a list of names and deliver it to a designated mailbox.
However, upon reaching the Southern headquarters, he discovers that the mission had been compromised by a wiretap interception, forcing him to dispatch agents to apprehend the female spy involved, thus making her a scapegoat while he escapes getting caught yet again.
What's next for the General in 'The Sympathizer'?
The General (Toan Le), trusting the Captain, gives him the task of selecting the personnel from the staff list, who could accompany him to the US.
Since the seats on the evacuation plane are limited, the General wants the best of the officers to accompany him.
However, the Captain betrays the General yet again. Though he tells the General that he has made the selection based on loyalty and capability, he has done quite the opposite.
The Captain assigns officers who may seem capable but are actually incapable. He does this not only to avoid suspicion but also to complicate the General's future actions, as he will have to deal with incompetent soldiers.
In the climax of Episode 1, we see General, his family, and some other soldiers getting onto the plane as they flee the country.
In the upcoming episodes, we expect to see how General builds up a new life in the US, struggling with a new culture and betrayal by the Captain, which he continues to remain unaware of!
