SAIGON, VIETNAM: 'The Sympathizer', a historical black comedy-drama, premiered on HBO Max, on Sunday, April 14.

The seven-episodic series is based on the 2015 award-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen.

Starring Hoa Xuande, the plot revolves around the Captain, a member of the South Vietnamese Army who is secretly working as a spy for North Vietnam. The series opens in 1975, featuring the final moments of the Vietnam War.

Why are the General and Captain escaping Vietnam in 'The Sympathizer' Episode 1?

In 'The Sympathizer' Episode 1, we witness the South Vietnamese General (Toan Le), with the help of CIA agent Claude (Robert Downey Jr), arranging a plane to flee Vietnam.

Due to the limited seats on the plane, the General tasks the Captain with selecting passengers from the staff list.

As the creators haven't yet delved much into the intricate details of what's happening, one needs a basic understanding of Vietnamese history to grasp the context of the series.

In the 1970s, the United States provided support to South Vietnam in its fight against the North. The war's toll on American lives significantly damaged its standing within the United States.

Following the US withdrawal from the region, the Viet Cong took control, leading to a mass exodus of thousands of South Vietnamese in a US-supported evacuation effort.

In the HBO series, while the General desperately wants to flee the country, The Captain has no such intentions as his loyalties lie with North Vietnam.

However, as he fears being caught, he plays along and prepares to flee to America along with everyone else.

Does the Captain board the plane to US in 'The Sympathizer'?

In the final moments of the pilot episode, we witness the General's convoy arriving at the Air Force base

As the bus speeds down the runway toward the aircraft, bombs rain down, with one striking the bus. Amid the chaos, everyone rushes towards the plane avoiding incoming explosions.

The Captain's plans to safely evacuate Bon (Fred Nguyen Khan) and his family turns into shambles. While stuck on the runaway, attempting to get on the plane, Bob's wife and baby are killed.

The Captain rushes back to console his friend as the plane readies for takeoff, facing a difficult decision amid the escalating tension.

Leaving behind his grieving friend would be cruel, but the time is running out and he must get on the plane.

The episode ends where it began- with Captain behind the bars. At this point, his fate is uncertain. Did he board that plane? Where is he held captive and will he come out of it alive?

We hope to get more clarity about the Captain's future as a mole in the upcoming episode.
