LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr starrer 'The Sympathizer' finally concludes with a riveting finale on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

The HBO Max series, in its seven episodes, recounts the harrowing journey of a communist spy embedded within the South Vietnamese army.

The finale episode finally reveals how Captain (Hoa Xuande) ended up in a North Vietnamese prison and why he is being repeatedly interrogated. The epic finale also reveals his eventual fate, thus offering the viewers a satisfying climax.

Captain has spent 12 months writing confession in the prison. However, he finds himself repeatedly interrogated, being asked to rework his confession because he fails to include something crucial.

Captain soon discovers that the masked Commissioner is none other than his friend and handler, Man (Duy Nguyễn). Man maintains that he is trying to save Bon and Captain from the higher-ups but ends up torturing them in every possible way.

As Man and his men believe that Captain hasn't confessed every single detail, they resort to electrocuting Captain.

After enduring unbearable pain, Captain finally recalls the guilt he had buried deep in his conscience. He admits that while the soldiers from the South tortured and assaulted a fellow female communist spy, he stood still, making no attempts to stop the brutality.

However, Man knew all along, as the same woman had been in the camp for two years and had already recounted her side of the story in her confession.

Man lets his guards down in front of Captain as they sit together for a drink and conversation. Man continues to assure Captain that he has his best interests at heart.

However, having realized that 'nothing' is more precious than freedom, he hatches an escape plan. He proceeds to tie up Man and then steals his mask and uniform.

He then rescues Bon (Fred Nguyen Khan), and together, the two best friends flee the camp.

In the final moments, we witness Bon and Captain boarding a boat at midnight, joining dozens of Vietnamese refugees to escape Vietnam.

The destination remains unknown, but Captain knows it will be far from home—a place where they can finally be safe and free.

The chances of making it out alive are slim, but they are hopeful.

'The Sympathizer' is available to stream on Max.
