'The Simpsons' is 'coming to an end', says theme music composer who believes the classic cartoon is in its final season

Danny Elfman made the shocking declaration while discussing the show's supposedly imminent end and said: "Well, from what I've heard, it is coming to an end."

'The Simpsons' theme music composer Danny Elfman left scores of fans devastated after he claimed that the latest season of the popular cartoon series could be its final one. Elfman made the shocking declaration while speaking to JOE on Saturday, November 23.

Elfman, the creator of the show's classic theme tune, was discussing the show's supposedly imminent end and said: "Well, from what I've heard, it is coming to an end. I don't know for a fact, but I've heard that it will be in its last year. All I can say is that I'm so flabbergasted and amazed that it has lasted as long as it did."

The 66-year-old continued: "You have to realize, when I scored 'The Simpsons', I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell."

'The Simpsons' cartoon, dubbed as the longest-running American sitcom, was created by Matt Groening in 1989. The cartoon series is also the longest-running American scripted primetime television series both in terms of seasons and number of episodes.

Fox, in February this year, had revealed that the show was being renewed for a 32nd season and is set to reach 713 episodes by the end of the latest season.

After Elfman's statements, multiple fans of the show took to social media to express their disappointment over the prospects of the show ending. One of the fans wrote: "I truly believe The Simpsons cannot end or we will splinter reality again. Causing Marty Mcfly to fix our last election and future cartoons."

Another wrote: "I demand that @The Simpsons don't end can we start a petition or something?!!!!" One fan took a more diplomatic approach, writing: "Even though its Golden Age is over, the idea that The Simpsons could end feels downright apocalyptic at this point."
