'The Righteous Gemstones' Episode 4 preview: Gideon continues to associate with Jesse's blackmailer as he regains his family's trust

'The Righteous Gemstones' episode 4 will see Gideon get involved further with Scotty, the man he worked with to try and blackmail his father, while his unsuspecting family begins to trust him again

We last saw Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) try to teach Johny Seasons (Dermot Mulroney) a lesson by sending his goons back after making them strip at gunpoint. As much as we have seen of 'The Righteous Gemstones' so far, the narrative of the show is a hodge-podge of different scenarios set up to finally tie in the main plotline.

So, for all we know, we might not see much of the tension that built between the Gemstones' church and the Locust Grove because the stills that were released by HBO of the upcoming episode does not feature any of the characters from the Locust Grove church. Instead, it looks like we will see more of Gideon (Skyler Gisondo) and in this episode and it looks like he is back to associate with Scotty (Scott MacArthur) -- the man he initially worked with to blackmail his father.

The very man who did not think twice about pushing his girlfriend down a hill because he thought she was dead. Scotty, a much better stuntman than Gideon, hopes to gain a fortune soon because he thinks Gideon would be able to fool his family and milk them for all the money they are worth.

The aim here is for them to retire in Thailand with mai tais in hand and live a laid back life. The next episode of the series will show if this is at all possible. For one, we know Gideon has been successful in fooling his family about his intentions because we see no hesitation or suspicion from Judy Gemstone (Edi Patterson) or The Gemstones' employee in one of the stills. In fact, the three of them are all smiling widely as if they have just heard some grand news.

It looks highly likely Jesse might not have a clue about his son. In the next episode, we must see if Gideon's father Jesse is able to make any connection at all between his son and the kidnappers. It would be fascinating to see how Jesse would react to this little fact considering he already thinks of his son as a man who abandoned his family and betrayed everyone. 

'The Righteous Gemstones' Episode 4 will air on Sunday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
