When Netflix's first Danish series 'The Rain' had first premiered in 2018, it was seen as a dystopian show where a virus that kills people instantly is released through clouds of rain. The show's lead, Rasmus, is the key to the cure for the virus and as the show progressed towards season 2, we also learn that he is also a carrier of the virus. Now, the third season is set to release, but the show's concept doesn't seem dystopian anymore. Coronavirus and the lockdown that forced individuals around the world into quarantine makes this show more real than ever. Sure, it uses deadly force and shocking methods to ensure survival, but it doesn't feel like a dystopian setting anymore, quite similar to shows such as 'The Handmaid's Tale'.

So what does the next season have in store for us? Rasmus and Simon are going to be on the opposite sides of the battle that began as a result of the virus that was released by Apollon into the world. With no cure on the horizon, Sten has decided that the best course of action would be to make others just like Rasmus -- immune to the virus. Of course, creating an army of people like him in the name of survival will put Simone, Martin, and others at risk and that conflict is going to be the crux of season 3.

Even as Rasmus falls for the manipulations of Sten, who was the man to lock Rasmus up in the first place, away from Apollon's clutches but within his reach, it was not out of the goodness of his heart. He is more the kind of maniac who believes that having both the access for the virus and its cure will put him at the top of the chain when it comes to global domination. If Sten is successful in populating the world with people that replicate Rasmus' immunity to the virus, the others who are survivors of the virus are all in grave danger.

As Martin says in the trailer of the show's upcoming season, this is not a good outcome for them. Simone responds that she will stop Rasmus and she seems sure of being able to do so. What she has failed to grasp is that her younger brother Rasmus is tired of running and seeing people close to him die. He believes that Sten's way is the only way forward to ensure that deaths can be stopped and his argument edges dangerously close to his agreement with the sentiment that survival of the fittest is the best foot forward for everyone.

The fact that Rasmus and Simone's father believed that he could be the answer to millions dying is twisted grossly by Sten and the trailer has us wonder if Simone can keep the promise that she had made to her father in season 1 -- to keep her brother safe. Not that their father is a great guy, we learned how he brought upon the viral apocalypse in the first place. Sure, he had initially thought he was saving the world by finding this virus to cure his really sick son, but instead, it ended many lives.

Now, it looks like his son is taking the same path as him in the name of the greater good -- attempting to tailor humans into beings that are immune to the virus. However, they are carriers who can infect the other survivors who have managed to stay alive so far. Will Simone succeed in stopping her brother with Martin and others' help or will she fail?

'The Rain' Season 3 premieres on August 6 and all episodes can be streamed on Netflix.
