'The Plot Against America' Finale: Bess-Evelyn face-off has fans demanding 'Emmys for Zoe Kazan, Winona Ryder'
HBO's mini-series 'The Plot Against America' came to a rather unsettling and unnerving conclusion. The series, adapted from Philip Roth's book, showed a what-if scenario where Nazi sympathizer Charles Lindbergh had won the elections in the 1940s, dethroning Franklin D Roosevelt.
Lindbergh's administration leads to chaos and turmoil in the country as crimes against Jews multiply tenfold. The horrors of Anti-Semitism is seen through the eyes of the Levin family. At the end of the episode, it is Election Day again, but it's not certain whether Franklin D Roosevelt wins the elections, as ballots and votes burn.
Fans are left in flux over the finale. One fan tweeted, "#ThePlotAgainstAmerica is one of the scariest shows on TV right now. Full stop." Another wrote, "#ThePlotAgainstAmerica is so wild..."
Others drew a parallel to the current scenario in the US and wrote, "Borders closed, rounding up the dissidents, slaughtering innocent people. #ThePlotAgainstAmerica..."
"The voter disenfranchisement! Jinkies, if only that wasn’t our current reality too," wrote another fan. "Just finished watching #ThePlotAgainstAmerica, and I don't know if it offers a window into our future's dark past or a window into our past's dark future. Regardless, a well-told, unsettling tale," tweeted a fan.
Another had some "thoughts" about the conclusion. "Just finished #ThePlotAgainstAmerica. A few thoughts: 1) Those comparing their lives to those of the people who lived in Europe/Southeast Asia in the 30s and 40s should stop patting themselves on the back. 2) Who won the election? 3) Is Europe Fascist or Communist?"
Fans praised Zoe Kazan's performance as Bess on the show. "Zoe Kazan’s performance in #ThePlotAgainstAmerica is nothing short of outstanding. The series is timely, frightening, and I really wish more people would talk about it because it deserves to be part of The Discourse. Seriously, if you enjoy being stressed, just binge it now."
Some fans tried to understand what Alvin had to do with the disappearance of Lindbergh's plane in the show. "They shot his plane down?" Alvin was clearly involved with anti-Lindbergh supporters who took the law into their hands.
Other fans wished that it had been longer, as there was just too much going on for six episodes. "#ThePlotAgainstAmerica was excellent but it could have been so much better. Too much to pack into 6 episodes. Feel like we lost out on what would have been a phenomenal multi-season series," wrote the fan.
At the end of the episode, Bess turns Evelyn (Winona Ryder) away and tells her to never come back. "The standoff between these sisters is heartbreaking Bess is a tough cookie tho," wrote a fan.
"Can we just give the Primetime Emmys to Winona Ryder and Zoe Kazan. And Golden Globes. I’m just in awe," tweeted a fan."I'm still speechless about the last Bess and Evelyn scene, @zoeinthecities and Winona were just brilliant, honestly, this whole show was #ThePlotAgainstAmerica," wrote another fan.
'The Plot Against America' is an HBO mini-series, helmed by David Simon. The series stars Morgan Spector, Azhy Robertson, Caleb Malis and Anthony Boyle as well.
