'The Magicians' Season 5 Episode 6: Big reveal about whales and time loop has fans excited
Spoiler alert for 'The Magicians' Season 5 Episode 6 'Oops!...I Did It Again'
Fillory has always been filled with strange and whimsical secrets, but every once in a while, 'The Magicians' reveals that the Earth has its fair share as well. In one of the series' most bizarre turns, it's revealed that the Earth is being protected from an all-consuming kraken by whales. Talking whales. Talking whales who are magicians that initiate a time loop caused by a broken moon.
"Only #TheMagicians could get away with the weirdness that is about to happen," says a fan on Twitter and they couldn't be more right.
The reveal that whales can talk and have been magicians all along was a throwaway plot point mentioned in the books by Lev Grossman, a moment that this Twitter user helpfully screenshots, which made fans of the book series very excited.
"Whales! Magic f**ing whales. If whales weren't from the book I'd say a plotline with whales was really jumping the shark," says this fan. "I can’t believe we have talking whales. This is hilarious," writes another.
Lev Grossman's 'The Magicians' wasn't the only book series that fans were referring to in their tweets. "If the whales say 'So long, and thanks for all the fish' we’re gonna lose it" says this one viewer, referencing the Douglad Adams 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' series, where talking dolphins say goodbye to humanity just before the Earth is destroyed.
Even for fans who didn't catch the references from the books, this was quite an amusingly strange moment for the show. "A time loop caused by whales? I gotta tell you, that's a new one," notes a viewer.
"THE WHALES WILL SAVE US" cries out this tweet.
