Spoilers for 'The Lovebirds'

'The Lovebirds' is a hilarious tale of a couple that is suddenly put to the most mind-bending (hilarious) test. Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) and Leilani (Issa Rae) have been together for a long time since they first had that very romantic night that extended well into the next day. Now four years later, the couple is having their share of relationship troubles. They cannot seem to mutually agree on anything, they are always disagreeing over the smallest of issues. While we had initially thought this is just relationship banter, it turns out that they want to break up for good much against their will and mostly because of how seemingly flaccid the relationship became.

And that is exactly when just as they took this decision, things are about to change. They somehow unintentionally get involved in the murder of a bicycle messenger. After their car is hijacked, Jibran, Leilani and the man who claimed to be a police officer (played by Paul Sparks) run over the messenger at least thrice killing him in the process. The man abandons the car with the duo in it and soon one bad idea after the other, they decide to solve the mystery themselves.

Leilani and Jibran flee from the scene of the crime because of the systemic racism in America and not because they were guilty. When the couple sit together at a diner after the accident, Jibran suggests that they go to the police for help, but Leilani points out the police will choose to not believe them because of their color.

Throughout the day, the police tried getting in touch with them, but after Leilani answers the phone once, the two continue ignoring their calls. When the police finally catch up with them, the two are very shocked to find out that the authorities weren't looking for them at all - the suspect was the man who actually killed the messenger. They are asked to rest and their statements would be taken the next day. A police car escorts them home. Needless to say that this car is driven by the same murderer only this time, he plans on killing them. They get to the lake and a desperate survival fight later, he is killed and our lovebirds are safe and sound.

It looks like despite all of this that Jibran and Leilani might not, after all, break up. In the end, we're shown what Leilani and Jibran have been up to since their adventure. As it turns out, the two did finally participate in The Amazing Race in London and even successfully reach the final lap. And here comes the catch - the final lap consists of horseback riding.

And we all know how Jibran's tryst with a horse went the last time around.

'The Lovebirds' is currently streaming on Netflix.
