Amazon's 'The Lord Of The Rings' series confirmed for Season 2 as filming of Season 1 is set to begin

Season 1 of Amazon Prime Video's 'The Lord Of The Rings' series is still a good year or more away, but the streaming service is clearly confident that the show will do well for them. The planned series has already been picked up for a second season, according to a report from Deadline

At the moment, pre-production for the series is just beginning to start in New Zealand, where Peter Jackson shot his massively successful films for the franchise. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke reportedly confirmed the news during the company’s holiday party on November 17 at the H Club in Hollywood.

The 'LOTR' series will reportedly explore new storylines preceding JRR Tolkien’s 'The Fellowship of the Ring', essentially serving as a prequel for the films. As fans of the franchise would know, Tolkien created a very vibrant world to set his stories and there are a lot of epic tales to be told in the early years of Middle-Earth.

According to the same report, the series will be going on hiatus for four or five months after filming the first two episodes from Season 1, directed by JA Bayona. This time will be used by the writing team of the series, led by JD Payne and Patrick McKay, to create a roadmap for how the first two seasons will play out. They will also reportedly be taking this time to write out the bulk of Season 2 scripts, using the filmed episodes to get a sense of what works and what doesn't.

The series is being produced by Amazon Studios with Payne and McKay as showrunners. The duo will also serve as executive producers alongside Bayona, Belén Atienza, Lindsey Weber, Bruce Richmond, Gene Kelly, Sharon Tal Yguado as well as writers Gennifer Hutchison; Jason Cahill and Justin Doble. There haven't been any official casting announcements for the series yet but Will Poulter, Markella Kavenagh and Joseph Mawle are rumored to be part of the cast.

'The Lord Of The Rings' series, which doesn't have a proper title as of yet, is expected to bring out its first season on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2021.
