The official trailer for the fifth and final season of TNT's 'The Last Ship' is out and hints at an explosive conclusion for the hit action-drama series. As the trailer opens, we're greeted with a crew preparing to engage in a covert mission by jumping off a plane, only to find themselves targeted and hit by a missile.

This upcoming season will see "the world finally recovering from the deadly virus that devastated the population, but global political tension still remaining." According to an official description, "Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) has retired and his former crew has scattered, many having risen in the ranks within the Navy. Sasha Cooper (Bridget Regan), Lieutenant Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle), SBS WO-N Wolf Taylor (Bren Foster) and Sergeant Azima Kandie (Jodie Turner Smith) are on a covert mission in Panama."

"When they are wrongly blamed for an attack on the Panamanian president, the consequences for the United States are dire. The USS Nathan James must fight to prevent invasion by Latin America — and the next world war. Season five is The Last Ship at its most epic, upping the ante on action and excitement, but at its core, it underscores the costs of prolonged war and the toll it takes on the heroes who fight it."

In the previously released 32-second teaser, we saw the soldiers head to an inevitable war as the narration proclaimed, "War is a beast. Sometimes the beast you face out on the field of battle, sometimes the beast hides out looking somewhere in the deep."

In this new trailer, we see the US government scrambling to maintain order as it finds itself a victim of an all-encompassing cyber attack and has its satellites shot down from orbit. As the war escalates, Chandler is desperate to get back and commandeer the USS Nathan James. As it closes out, we hear him say: "You may have hit us hard, but you didn't finish us. Come at us again, I dare you. This is Nathan James. Out."

By the looks of the trailer, it's all but certain that this season will give the popular series the goodbye it deserves. The first episode of season 5, 'Casus Belli', takes place three years after overcoming the global famine and will have "the United States Navy is ready to unveil its first fully functional fleet since the Red Flu pandemic, but a new type of threat may mean the next world war."

The fourth season held up its predecessors' high standards and was ranked as one of the summer's top five cable dramas, reaching a total of 24 million viewers on TNT’s linear, VOD and digital platforms. The show was then immediately renewed for a 10-episode fifth season that will follow up from where the last season left off.

The series is produced by Turner's Studio T in association with Platinum Dunes, whose partners — filmmaker Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form — serve as executive producers. Co-creators Hank Steinberg and Steven Kane also serve as executive producers, along with director Paul Holahan. Kane served as showrunner for seasons four and five, having previously served alongside Steinberg for the first three seasons.

'The Last Ship' will return for its final season on September 9 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT) on the TNT Network.
