WICHITA, KANSAS: 'The Killer Inside: The Ruth Finley Story' premiered on Lifetime on June 29, and the engaging thriller stars the brilliant Teri Hatcher as Ruth Finley and Tahmoh Penikett as her husband Ed.
The movie follows the life of Ruth as the town of Wichita feels threatened by a serial killer by the name of BTK Killer (James Ralph). When her husband Ed has a heart attack, she begins to become a victim of multiple attacks as there is a home invasion followed by a kidnapping attempt and then an attack on her near a shopping mall.
As the movie approaches its end, there are questions about who the stalker is and whether the police can save Ruth and Ed. The officer in charge is Lt. Bernie Drowatzky (Eduard Witzke) who becomes increasingly affected by the case. Can Ruth survive? Here's what happens at the end of the movie.
Ruth Finley lights a fire near her house
As police struggle to find the killer, Ruth returns from the hospital and wants to celebrate Ed's birthday. The night when she returns from the hospital, Ruth and Ed are sleeping when Ruth gets up and sets a plant near her home on fire and also cuts the telephone line. As the fire gets extinguished, it confuses the police even more as there are no footsteps found and no other evidence is recovered either.
Bernie's boss gets a letter that threatens him and that leads them to believe that it is Ed who is responsible for the incidents as no one else knew about the case and the police find no evidence anywhere. Ed is arrested and questioned but he denies everything and willingly gives a polygraph test that proves his innocence.
Police find out the truth about Ruth Finley
Ed is proven innocent and that leaves Ruth to be the only suspect. They ask Ed to help them and get Ruth to the police station. Police found evidence and CCTV footage about the attack on her that happened at the shopping mall showed her stabbing herself.
Ruth seems confused and the police blame her for wasting $400, 000 of police money searching for the BTK Killer. Ruth doesn't confess to her crimes and the police want Ed to help in getting confession. Ruth is still adamant about not being the stalker but evidence points otherwise as she decides to take psychological help while still having charges on her
Ruth Finley takes psychological help to discover what happened
Ruth talks to a psychotherapist and discusses her life and mental state. She talks about not crying for long and keeping a hold of emotions. The therapist talks about Ed's heart attack and how that affected her mental health. He asks Ruth to write about her trauma. Ed comes to visit her after a long time and she asks him whether he thinks that she did what she did on purpose
Ruth's journal gives the therapist a clue that she has multiple personality disorder. She talks about a teenage incident where she was attacked which she has mentioned earlier too but she reveals other fuzzy memories. Her memories mention a red bandana which she links to a farmer in her neighborhood who would assault her as a child. She has suppressed her trauma for years and the abuse is where she disassociated with herself. The police dropped charges against her
She blames her mother for never supporting her and helping her come out and express herself. She remembers everything about how the incidents took place and even admits to stabbing herself inadvertently. Ed decides to take care of his wife and understands her.
