Maria Geiger (Rosalie Thomass) and Karl Nieke's (Laurence Rupp) relationship takes an unforeseen twist when a night of intimacy blossoms into love. Eager to express his feelings, Karl decides to visit Maria's apartment, armed with a bouquet and a heartfelt love note.

However, his plans take an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Olaf, who coincidentally arrives at the same time.

Olaf, Maria's long-time lover and the father of her child had left her years ago due to professional commitments. During his absence, Maria bravely navigated the challenges of single parenthood while successfully managing her agency.

Despite the passing years, she never moved on, steadfastly holding onto the hope that Olaf would one day return to their lives.

Sensitive to Maria's enduring feelings for Olaf, Karl chooses to keep his emotions to himself and gracefully steps back.  Displaying a noble gesture, he hands over the bouquet to Olaf, explaining that it's a token of gratitude for Maria's therapy sessions.

With a silent acknowledgment of the complexity of their relationships, Karl gracefully exits the scene.

Later, Olaf expresses remorse to Maria, admitting that he regrets prioritizing his job over their relationship. Now, he's determined to dedicate his life to them. Simultaneously, he contemplates a new job offer in the city.

Maria finds herself torn between her newfound love and the father of her child. The resolution to her dilemma comes when her daughter, Hedi (Cora Trube), expresses that it's unwise for parents to persist in an unhappy relationship merely for the sake of their children.

Casually, Hedi expresses her acceptance of the idea that she and Olaf can live separately if their love has dwindled.

Shocked by Karl's abrupt disappearance and skeptical of any change in him, Maria discovers a note tucked within the bouquet he left behind. Reading about Karl's heartfelt desire to be with her, she decides to take the initiative.

Maria visits his apartment and extends an invitation, asking if he would be open to going out for drinks together. However, he declines the invitation, citing the lingering pain from heartbreak as the reason he's hesitant to take another chance at love.

Later that night, during a conversation about destiny and fate, Karl is struck by a realization about his connection with Maria. Feeling compelled to give their relationship another chance, he decides to express his feelings.

However, as he heads to meet her, his romantic proposal is ruined when an enraged girlfriend of a client attacks Karl. The film concludes with Karl and Maria securing a happy ending for themselves.

'The Heartbreak Agency' is currently streaming on Netflix.
