'The Flash' season 6 might see the return of Reverse-Flash, Zoom, Godspeed and more while it sets up 'Crisis on Infinite Earths'
This year will see 'The Flash' enter its sixth season in October. The Scarlet Speedster had a tough time in the last season of the show, meeting and then losing his daughter from the future and finding out that he is fated to disappear in the near-future. With 'Crisis on Infinite Earths', this year's major crossover event looming over the Arrowverse, the sixth season will have to help set up the world-breaking Crisis.
At the end of the last season, Eobard Thawne, Flash's arch-rival known as the Reverse-Flash, escaped imprisonment. The new season will have to continue his arc, especially since he has hinted that he will have a part to play in the upcoming Crisis. ThiSs is where the Legion of Doom comes in.
The second season of 'The Flash's spin-off series 'Legends of Tomorrow' had Damien Darhk and Malcolm Merlyn from 'Arrow' teaming up with Eobard Thawne. Though that team-up eventually fell apart, the Legion of Doom plays an important part in the comics version of the 'Crisis on Infinite Earths'. Perhaps season six will see the Reverse-Flash recruiting a new Legion in preparation for the upcoming event.
At this point, we don’t yet know who the big bad for the new season will be. Every season of 'The Flash' so far has centered on a single primary antagonist. All we know about the main villain of season six is that it will be a male character and he will probably be a new character, based on a report by TVLine. There has been some speculation that the villain might be a version of the Red Death.
The Red Death was name-dropped during season five but we don't know for sure if the villain will be making his way to the show yet. In the comics, Red Death is a relatively new character, a fusion between Barry Allen and Batman. He was introduced during 2017's hit series 'Dark Nights: Metal'. The CW shows have not introduced a version of Batman so far, though his hometown of Gotham and his cousin Kate Kane (Batwoman) were introduced during the 'Elseworlds' crossover event.
In the comics, Barry Allen sacrifices himself by racing backward in time to save the multiverse from the evil Anti-Monitor, occasionally stopping to warn his friends of the danger to come. Season five sets this up by revealing that Barry disappears from the timeline in 2024. The finale of that season saw the timeline being changed to bring that date up to 2019. All the evidence points to this being the last race for this version of the Flash and it is likely that the Future Flash might make a series of cameos, helping Team Flash out of sticky situations.
The new season might also bring back Hunter Zolomon, the evil speedster known as Zoom. Season two of 'The Flash' ended with Zoom, the big bad of that season, being transformed into a version of the Black Racer. The Black Racer is the Speed Force's equivalent for the Grim Reaper, chasing down speedsters at the end of their lives. If Barry is to die in this Crisis, we might just see the return of the Black Racer.
Then there’s also the problem of Godspeed, the super-fast villain introduced in the fifth season. August Heart, a speedster from the future, was stopped by Barry's future daughter Nora West-Allen but with Nora being erased from the timeline, Godspeed's fate is once again unknown.
There have also been reports that the sixth season will introduce a new scientist character who is drawn to aliens. This might just be a hint to the Shadow-Demons, minions of the Anti-Monitor with the devastating ability to kill people just by touching them. Considering the Monitor has already been introduced during 'Elseworlds', it is only a matter of time till his evil counterpart shows up to wreak devastation on the multiverse, especially since 'Elseworlds' also introduced Psycho-Pirate, another henchman of the Anti-Monitor.
There is still a long road ahead until the crossover and anything can happen considering the sheer amount of possibilities opened up by the fifth season. Will the Reverse-Flash assemble a new Legion of Doom? Could season six bring back the Black Racer? And what role might Godspeed have to play in the upcoming Crisis? We'll just have to wait and see.
Season 6 of 'The Flash' will arrive on October 8, 2019.
