'The Favourite' trailer: Olivia Coleman reigns supreme in the face of a royal tragicomedy
As the story, centered in the 18th century England unfolds, Coleman's delightfully eccentric portrayal of the gout-ridden Queen is complemented by Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
On the heels of a successful opening at the film festival circuit - last week's Venice and Telluride film festivals, Olivia Coleman-starring 'The Favourite' has unveiled an official trailer for the British historical drama. And if the clip is any proof, it's one of those rare tragicomedies that triumphs over the trivial to highlight the tragicomedy that's at the heart of this Yorgos Lanthimos-directed period piece.
Taking center stage in the first trailer, however, is Coleman - the 44-year-old actress with three BAFTA Awards, three BIFA Awards, one Golden Globe Award, and at least two Emmy nominations - as Queen Anne, albeit in her later years and not in her best avatar. As the story, centered in the 18th century England unfolds, Coleman's delightfully eccentric portrayal of the gout-ridden Queen is complemented by the domineering presence of Academy Award-winning actress Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
In the grand scheme of things, Weisz stars as Lady Sarah, who has been conveniently positioned by the Queen as the in-charge of royal affairs in her place. Just when it seems like everything is (almost) under control, though, out of nowhere appears Sarah’s cousin Abigail, starring Stone. And thus begins a rivalry of sorts between Lady Sarah and Abigail - both gritty and both fighting for the coveted spot to become the Queen's favorite, in order to relish the fruits of her favor.
Needless to say, the Lanthimos-directed, and Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara-scripted period drama, which has already stirred up some rave reviews ahead of its U.S. release from the festival circuit, is sure to shine the spotlight on Coleman along with Stone and Weisz. Perhaps even securing a spot for the trio at the upcoming Oscar's race.
But before the film from Fox Searchlight is ready for its theatrical run, 'The Favourite,' chronicling a bitter royal rift between cousins, will be headlining the New York Film Festival on September 28, concluding its festival run with an opening night bang.
'The Favourite' is scheduled to release in the US on November 23. Check out the official poster below:
