'The Deuce' season 3 started off by making one important point - as much as everything changes on a surface level, things will remain the same underneath. However much Candy tried to showcase her talent in the pornography film industry by catering not just to the needs of the white male population, but by also giving preference to what women want in bed, her efforts are not appreciated. The business might be booming in the pornography industry, but that is not the art that Candy wants to be known for - fake ejaculations or exaggerated moans of pleasure. Harvey, who happens to be Candy's investor for films that she has been making all this while has decided that he will not be opening his pocket further to indulge in Candy's whims.

He also tells her that she might have to find a new investor if she wanted to continue making films as she has done so far. While Candy seems confident enough to argue with Harvey over why she isn't willing to change her style of filmmaking to cater to entitled men, she is unsure as to how she would proceed further. In fact, towards the end of the first episode, Candy is back at Vince's club where she is seen ringing in the new year, not with her family, or friends, but alone as she contemplates the position that she is in. This is something that we have seen Candy do over the seasons on different occasions. She has always been particular that she did not depend on men who would end up using her for their profit. The reason why she did not have a pimp in the first season was that she understood the business behind being a prostitute. She understood that the pimps on the street who promise safety and security are a lot more manipulative, and in cases like CC, even mentally and physically abusive.

She was street smart, cautious and that was one of the main reasons why she saw value in the business of pornography in the first place. Initially, when she was asked to stand-in for one of the girls who couldn't make it to the shoot, she was hesitant because she did not agree with how the distributor enjoyed the lion's share of profits but she found a workaround and became a filmmaker. Will she continue to find ways around the obstacles or will the finale season portray the downfall of who Candy was?

We will get a hint about the direction that the show will take in the future episodes. 'The Deuce' season 3 episode 2 will air on Monday at 9 pm ET.
